Do you really need 8 ports... are you doing extensive routing between individual devices, or you just looking to get all of your midi signals in and out of the PC... You can get by with a one port midi interface if you use all eight channels of the one port...

An eight port port interface actually provides you 64 channels of bi-directional midi communication... this is more than most require...

Right, issues arise when you want bi-directional support - daisy-chaining your devices via midi-trhoughs only works one way cause you only have one MIDI through port on your devices.

I have a large collection of keyboards and i record real time control through midi (like time trip pad and d-beam on my v-synth)

My virus TI , nord lead 3 , andromeda , radias , emu xtreme lead , karma all have the ability to layer patches using their own midi ports for each patch, this along with prog patch changes , realtime control and multitimbral setups will not run through a couple of ports because the sheer amount of midi data causes latency and drop outs very fast.

I like no more than 2 midi channels on one midi interface.

Its becoming less of an issue because alot of new stuff controls midi through USB which is great , id like to get rid of all the damn midi cables i have strung around my studio atm, audio patch cables with stereo keyboards are bad enough.

Some midi throughs can be set up bi-directionally... but you're right... most cannot, depends on the device... and latency is definetly an issue with all that messaging... Never mind :o

The uSB connection is ONLY from the interface to your computer, it won't save you from the need for midi cables between it and the midi devices.

a computer with 10 usb sockets and a bunch of synths with midi through usb is like each having its own MIDI interface.

Well, if all your synths support USB (none of mine do), then you have no need for a midi interface, and this whole thread is moot.

What synths are you talking about? I can't think of any off the top of my head that support usb.
