hey all,
got a motu 828 recently but it's suffering from some of the dreaded booting freezes/fails.

It has three logo/splash screens before boot, but most times it'll freeze at one of them.
Led backlight for the display has also blown.

I found two domed caps and replaced one which didn't help. the other cap is in the mail as i didn't have one lying about.

In the meantime i decided to replace the Led, and now it lights up like christmas (sorry..' the holidays! '), but the strange thing is it has booted flawlessly about 15/20 times in a row now.

My question is, is it possible for a simple blown led to cause intermittent booting faults, or have i just got a bit of a fluke goin here.

Thanks in advance.

Not likely. BTW how did your thesis on capturing the pure sound of musical instruments go? I'd be interested to know

as it goes you were right...time showed the fault again. but my new cap just arrived so i'll keep you updated!

Thanks for askin bout uni :) i changed the idea about since then, and now i'm looking at the evolution of audio technical studio roles. Nothing too exciting, but hey! i'm learnin stuff :P

replaced the cap this morning.

strangely enough, the unit booted fine several times, but i experienced dropouts / reboots after 15 or 20 seconds of audio playback.

Did the built in software factory reset and it's been fine for a few hours now, but the dropouts have me on edge a little.

Is something like that common? do caps have a 'break in' period or anything like that?

Thanks guys.

No. There's probably at least one or two other bad caps. If one is bad, odds are, every electrolytic in the power supply section is bad and should be replaced, preferably at the same time.

thanks for that dgat. i'm not sure why i got dropouts....maybe it was a software/firmware fluke, but touch wood, the unit has been 100% perfect all yesterday and today....

i listened to music for a few hours while i was working, and worked on an audio session for another few hours with no faults. (hmmmmmm)

stay tuned! hopefully there'll be no news.

Morning,

It sounds like i'm having similar problems, although none of the display LEDs have blown.

Yesterday I switched on the Motu 828 and it froze at the first screen "MOTU 828USB". I switched it off and back on and it booted up fine. Today, the same problem has repeated about 15/20 times and I can't get it to boot up.

Is there any way I can reset it? I've tried pressing Setup, turning it all the way to the right, pressing Select and then pressing Value...

Any help would be muchly appreciated although i'm pretty sure it's going to be a repair job.

I removed all connections and switched off the mains, put it back together and it's now giving me 'Bad Altera File'

oh wow...not familiar with that.

i can tell you that the reset procedure that you detailed only works if the unit has booted properly. it's not a blind reset, you'll see the options on screen.

Next time it boots, if it boots, try the reset procedure immediately.

The only other thing worth suggesting is to UNPLUG THE MAINS, the flick the 115/240v switch on the side a few times.

Then plug the unit in and try it MAKING SURE that it's set back to your countries voltage first.
DO NOT power on with the wrong voltage setting.
sounds stupid i know, but this is how my problem started :P:P

if yours is a mk1 this may not be relevant...i don't know the range well enough to be sure.
