MOTU 2408 MK1, 1010, or Omni Studio?

The MOTU and 1010 are obviously more expensive, but I could possibly get the MOTU for about the same price as the 1010 (my main decision is between the two).

My main concerns are:

The MOTU has unbalanced RCA inputs.

The 1010 doesn't have any mic pre's either, but it does have balanced 1/4" inputs.

The Omni Studio, however, does have balanced 1/4"-XLR inputs, but it only has 2 compared to 8 for the others.

The MOTU also has 3 sets of 8 channel adat optical inputs and outputs, 3 sets of Tascam T/DIF I/O, an S/PDIF I/O, and a word clock sync. The PCI card has 3 spaces so I can add (3) 2408's with the one card (for a total of 72 inputs). Plus it also has a midi I/O, which the 1010 does not.

Now my main decision is between the 1010 and the MOTU, and I am leaning towards the latter. I have almost eliminated the Omni Studio because I will probably need more I/Os in the near future (2 is enough for now).

I also plan to buy the M-Audio DMP3 as my mic preamp (maybe a Meek later on), and I'm also looking into an RNC. As for mics, for now I will be using an SM57 and my friend's v67. I could probably borrow a beta 58a from another friend too, but I'm not counting on it.

If someone who has more information about these systems could chime in, I would really really really appreciate it. I have been searching for deals for a while, and this is my best chance yet.

I would say the Delta 1010 out of the 3 you suggested. But I voted other because you should check out the MOTU 828. It is cool and you can also put 3 of these things together now that they have released thier 2.0 drivers. It has 2 preamps and 6 balanced/unbalanced 1/4 ins. Also 8 Adat light in and out and Spdif in/out. I think it is a hell of a deal. Not to mention that firewire will be around longer than PCI most likely. And firewire is compliant on mac and pc. Firewire also has a higher data transfer than older harddrives. That means low latency. So I say take a long hard look at the MOTU 828. The place I work is probably ordering one this week for a laptop recordinf solution. I'll let you guys know what I think when I get to use it.

But the 828 is probably much more expensive, especially compared to the deal I'm getting. That, and I don't want to go out and get a firewire card to be able to use the 828 (does it come with one?). Thanks for your input though.
 
out of those choicesi'd get the delta 1010. the omni if you need ok preamps. with the delta i'd just buy a nice preamp. the only motu i'd get over the delta is the 896, but its like $1200 and motu's support is up there with digidesign, Close to none
 
FYI--marsmusic.com has the MOTU1224 core system for $499 online right now. You don't get the ADAT stuff, but its supposed to be a great sounding interface and it comes with the PCI card. $499--its a no brainer. Supposed to have a better word clock too. The 2408 MKII has balanced ins on it, by the way. I know. I have the Mk I, unfortunately.
 
Does every mars have the 1224 for that price? If it does I might have to get one, even though I already have the card.
 
WHy are you only looking at the MKI of MOTU 2408? MKII has been going on ebay lately for about 500, which is pretty darn cool, but occasionaly they go for 350-400, which is even better.
 
mastahnke--All I know is that is what its priced at on their on-line catalog.
 
firewire around longer than pci?

and no, firewire is not faster than a pci card, it is actually a lot slower.

but you says its compatable with mac and pc which is nice, but isn't the pci card as well? im not certain about macs so i don't know.

the portability of the firewire is an awesome thing though, but ive heard motu has terrible support for PC's.
 
I've used the 2408 mkII on PC, sounds good and had very little trouble. But MOTU support is NONEXISTANT for PC. I wouldn't buy anything of theirs again.

Just bought the MOTU 896 and am a PC user and can honestly say i could not be happier with the ease of use and wow what sound just recording at 16 bit,haven't even messed with 24 bit yet but will soon,yes does lack software i agree theres nothing but a control panel,no mixer,nothing which kinda blows but i know they have more if your a mac user.For the$ would buy another in a heartbeat......Simply Awesome!
 
Well since posting what I posted before, I have gotten an Aardvark Q10. Great pres, great sound, easy to use and good drivers. Look into it if you haven't already found something. The 896 does sound great, but it is over $1000 and has very little software support on the PC side.
