Well of course not ALL western digital drives are going to be bad, but I've seen 6 or so die prematurely. Therefore I absolutely cannot recommend them.

So what are you saying Slack? You *don't* recommend Western Digital? :D

I hope there wasn't too much important stuff on it.

Oh it wasn't mine...it was at a company I sometimes do some work for :)

Are you aware there was a recall on Western Digital drives some time ago? It was pretty well published at the time. It involved a chip on the controller card that was defective on drives made over a period of a couple of months. My company uses WD drives too (about 200 PCs in my building) and fortunately we did not have any that were effected. You can download a small DOS program from WD that will test your system to see if it was from the bad lot. If your IT people slept through the recall info, that might explain why you have so many drives croaking.

RWhite: very well aware.. Thank god i've never sold them. That would be a nightmare. Maxtor falls in a close second place to drives that fail more often than others. Disclaimer.. should be on top. This is in my experience, not necessarily the absolute truth.

Quantum's are good. Never replaced one (well 1 actually), but lots of WD's and Maxtor's. I think Maxtor reconditions the drive that so many people send back... maybe that's why they have such a low MTBF. They do have a good warranty though.. hmmm..

I bought a 20 GB Quantum.
I hope it is fast and lasts a long, long time...
