Most versitle mics for a 2 mic setup

I just purchased a Fostex MR-8 digital multitrack to record some sons in my bedroom and am looking to get 2 XLR mics to use on various instruments (drums, electric guitar amp, vocals, etc.). I will be using various placements as well (overhead, room, close). What do you all suggest I get? I guess I am thinking on somewhat of a budget. Considering the recording device is not some expensive top of the line workstation and I am making bedroom albums I would imagine a super expensive mic would just be a waste of money. Regardless, I want some opinions before I make a decision. Cheers.

I am want to use these mics on some more quiet instruments too, particularly acoustic guitar and a thumb piano.

Honestly, you're not going to be doing anything phenominal on that Fostex, so not knowing what your budget actually is I would say just go with some shure sm57's for now and have some fun!

Anyone used the Audio-Technica pro 31? I found a good deal on those.
