To add onto this tangent, I have the Valve Jr. 5W head. I use it like a power amp - always connect a Sansamp pedal or some other kind of preamp to the input. (Without a tone stack, I find the Valve Jr. very disappointing. With the ability to shape the tone and boost the input (i.e. a preamp) makes it rawk.)
I also use this as an all-tube output stage for my Line 6 Pod XT Live. Not trying to rekindle a modeling debate - obviously opinions vary - but I like the results when an all digital DSP modeling device comes out of an all tube amplifier.
I've tried it with a Peavey 410, a Genz-Benz 210, and a Peavey 115 BW cabinet. It sounds best with the 115.
Cons to this setup: No real reverb, limited clean headroom
Pros to this setup: Cranking an all tube amplifier without tinnitus
Best yet - I got the Valve Jr. for $99 and the Peavey 115 off craigslist for $50. $149 for power amp + cab, and then add preamps/effects to taste.

My favorite recording amp is the amp I built a few months ago and it has features galore ....

Low and High impedance inputs , 15 band EQ , High Pass/Low pass , 4 notch filters , Pre eq DI, Post EQ DI , Fender and Marshal Speaker simulators , Fat,Thin and Bright Switches , Tube gain ,Solid State pre-tube gain , FX Send ,Return , Preamp EQ and power amp sections can all be used or bypassed seperately , LED VU meter and clipping indicator...Does 100w into 8 ohms..... 100% analogue !!!
Some if it was DIY kit some is consumer gear integrated into the amp and some is 100% diy...
This is a great sounding amp and does clean and super heavy and dirty equally well and with the pre and post EQ DI I can record 2 guitar tracks at once and with the speaker simulators I get a good tone without a speaker connected ... extremely versitile but it really shines when you got it plugged into a 4x12 cab and is cranked up ... between you and me I think it sounds better than my buddies mesa dual rec and his 74 marshall Mark IV ....

I strongly suggest the Vox AC15. its $599.99 new but its worth it. Its one of the most versatile amps out there. The top boost section works charms when youre trying to dial in just the right amount of OD, but still keep it relatively clean.
