well being a bassist myself and having that guitar one done I figure that I should do it

well these are two for now

Chris Squire - Yes
and
John Entwistle - The Who.....I must say that his live at leeds stuff is awesome

well I could say about a million jazz bassists but I'll just say almost all jazz bassists are underated

oh and I also want to give a shout out to an underated piano player
his name is Eldar and he is 18 years old and already he is like a freakin master at piano

so I suppose this thread is for whoever is underated except for geetarists

i really dont think chris squire is underrated. I think most people give him the proper amount of respect (which is a ton of respect). Chris squire freaking owns!

Call me nuts, but how about Roger Waters?

Maybe not so much his playing ability, but his tone.

As I said, crazy, but I'm sticking by it....

Agreed. If Chris Squire is an "underrated" bassist, I'd hate to see your idea of a "rated" bassist. EVERYONE knows that guy is the shit. Entwistle as well.

Agreed!

That being said, Robert DeLeo is one bad-ass mofo playing Rock bass!

Now that is a great example of an underrated bassist. I never even heard of him, and I have played for 25 years and listen to all kinds of music.

Is he your uncle?

Does anybody agree with me that Jaco is the most OVER rated bass player? He had a bass sound like a bottled fart, left Weather Report with no bottom end whatsoever and generally contributed to the view that jazz players play for themselves and not the audience.

Kristoffer Gildenlow of Pain Of Salvation. His contribution the band and slap playing is beyond amazing.

Check out the songs "People passing by," and "To The End."

I don't know if he's rated or not, but I like Mike Mills from REM's 'lead bass' playing, he doesn't do anything particularly technical or flashy, he's just a good band player. I rate him for what he contributes to the music.

I guess it would depend on what role you think the bass player should have plays into this question.
I would say Paul McCartney, just because his songwriting overshadows his playing so much.
I personally don't care for the "lead' bass players who are constantly jacking off all over the fretboard.I like the guys who keep it together with an occasional flourish.

I'd have to say Billy Sheehan, because the world needs a LOT more bass tapping

Oh wait, you said under rated, sorry :o

Les Claypool.....Ok, he plays some weird shit, but The Final Voyage Of The Liquid is way cool, and so is Southbound Pachyderm.... :D

John Paul Jones. Especially the blues stuff. I just think that guy is cool.

Ryan Martine of Mudvayne. He taps, slaps and craps out genious without the need for fiber. One of my fav "new" bassists. Bet you guys have never heard of Jean Baudin. He plays for Nuclear Rabbit. You wanna see some pretty awesome taps on a 9 string? http://www.jeanbaudin.com/vids/jeanbaudin_mario.mov
If that doesn't get ya there try www.jeanbaudin.com
He's playin the standard mario 3 joint. The man has a custom Conklin 9 string done up with a Pac-man theme. I know _I'm_ jealous.

agreed, and i feel the same way about the bassist from new order (peter hook?). very melodic player. often, the bassline was the catchiest, hookiest part of the song.

any jah wobble fans? he's done countless collaborative projects (most noteable w/ bill laswell) and also played in the origianl line-up of PIL, but his solo stuff is pretty cool too. dub and world-beat influenced. very stoney.

He was the bass player for the Stone Temple Pilots.
