The 57 isn't over rated. All the Chinese condensors however.....

good that you mention it.

studio projects B1 maybe?

AKG 3000
AKG 1000
Rode NT1

studio projects B1 maybe?

How is a good sounding $79 mic over rated? I just can't get myself to think about any descent mics under $100 as over rated. They're all useful for something and they cost chump change. YMMV

Blessings, Terry

You guys are going in the wrong direction...

I vote for the Neumann U87 Ai.
When I read the title of this thread, I thought for sure that it would be talking about the 87. Amen!

I'd comment... but, then this thread would turn into a mess. With that said, I'll say Mr. Microphone. :D

No, I'm with Terry on this one. The only way to overrate a $79 mic would be if it WAS Mr. Microphone. I don't think either the B1 or the 57 qualify as they're great mics FOR THE MONEY. The $2500 U87 Ai, on the other hand, sounds like a $300 SP T1. :p

You don't really want me to comment on the 797 Audio/Studio Projects B1 do you... or do you?

Erm...

Who, exactly, has been over-rating the C1000?

Last time I looked most people regarded it as pretty useless.

I guess it depends on who's doing the rating. Recording mags? The manufacturer? Posters on this BBS? And do we take bang for buck into account? If we do, the SM57, Studio Projects B-1, Marshall V67G and MXL 603, Oktava MC012, are hardly overated. They deliver performance way beyond the price point. The SM57 is a really bad $2000 mic. It is, however, a *great* $80 mic. If we look at this board, I wouldn't call the C1000S overated by any means. In fact you can get somebody to bash it, anytime, anywhere.
So I guess the question is- what are the most useless mics, and what are the most overpriced mics? Useless- C1000S, C3000B, Behringer B-1, Samson C02. Over priced?- Yeah, Neumann U87ai, B.L.U.E. Blueberry, Neumann KM184, Oktava ML-52. None of those are bad mics, they just cost more than they are worth.-Richie

I totally agree. When you can buy a very similar-sounding mic for 1/10 of the price, it's overrated!

No need. You've already gone great lengths to "underrate" the B1. We're talking about 'overrated' mics in this thread.

Flatpicker, I'm curious... if you could only own a B1 or 57... which one would it be?
