But what is up w/ his serial killer fingernails?

That's frightening...

Haven't seen many classical guitarists huh? :)

I've seen Esteban, many many years ago...
He's always amazed me.

Know who really amazes me though?
Just about any Bluegrass banjo player, which i'm sure are great on guitar too.

Via, Satriani = Boring, Repetetive, Uninspiring

To you, they may be uninspiring and boring but repetitive, give me a break. These guys have a larger library of riffs they pull off than any stinky blues player you could name. Mostly because they already know all the stinky blues player riffs along with all the really nasty shit that Clapton and the likes could only dream of playing.

I watch his live show at 03:00am every day.
I can't get enough of him.
I love the $10,000 guitar that you can get for $50.00! What a deal.

i've played one of his guitars... the intonation wasn't as bad as i thought it would be, but it feels like its made out of cardboard and a lot of glue.

About the "riffs," sure a few set licks are cool, but why can't they be more spontaneous? Like perhaps not knowing what you are going to play before you play it??

About banjo players, they are amazing. I have tried to play bajo for a few years, and believe me, it is harder than it sounds! Béla Fleck is one of the best and he is amazing on guitar too.

Bela Fleck is probably one of the most underrated musicians today.

What does that have to do with anything? Not all music is improvised ya know.

Sorry, I cant help it. How can you say that? Clapton is the greatest guitar player who ever lived. Did you see him at the Crossroads guitar festival? He was at least twice as good as any other guitar player there, and that includes LEGENDS like Buddy Guy. You try to play any of the stuff off his unplugged album and you will see that he is amazing.

Another vote for Clapton being overrated.

Music either moves you or it doesn't. His doesn't.

Clapton
Dave Navarro (big time)
Johnny Lang
Tom Morrelo
Nugent
B.B. King
John Meyer

B.B. King is not overrated.

theres a lot more to guitar playing other than how many notes you can play in a second.

"This is a racist thing to say, but I really think black people who play rock music are really cool. My favorite studio guys to play with are all black rocker dudes, and we all dig Lenny. Just take him for what he is."
-Hard2Hear

Why do you think that saying this is racist. Just because you like Black rockers and proclaim it does not make you a racist. Lighten up dude. Don't let political correctness get the best of you. I totally agree Black dudes who play rock kick ass. I just wish there were more.

Oh yeah, has anyone ever bought that Eesteban thing? I really don't understand how claims like that could be made if they weren't true. Doesn't anyone have any decency??

I did have a customer bring in one of the guitars. They, in the kindest possible words I can think of, suck major ass. Total and complete utter crap.

I have seen worse guitars, but only because they had had run ins with bulldozers, or airline bagage handdlers.

I agree with many on the original list, but I disagree about Kerry King. He and Jeff Hanneman write the lion's share of Slayer's music, and of the riffs very little, if any at all, were derivative of other contemporary thrash bands. These guys are still going strong. Granted, you may not be a fan of the hardcore anti-musical solos, but that's part of the Slayer package, and you just have to shrug or stop listening.

Do you mean the greatest at a certain style? If I take what you say literally then he could smoke Paco at Flamenco correct?

Yeah, a lot of that stuff is absolutely amazing. I always imagine what it would sound like played on a distorted electric guitar. Those guys are all the kings of speed metal in disguise. ;)

If any guitarists are truly overrated, it is the guys in virtually any nu metal bands. I know that most people who are actually knowledgable about this stuff think they're the worst there has ever been, but there are a BAJILLION idiots who pick up a guitar and play their crap and think that they are gods. It is absurd.

Even if you dislike some big name guitarist, chances are that they at least started something different. Nu metal is just horrendous in general. I don't understand how it is even possible.

I think we're trying to do something that is difficult to do. I can't tell you how many times I sit around with my friends, having fun, and say, "Oh, that song sucks..." or "That guy is the worst guitar player I've ever heard..." etc... but the truth is they're doing something I couldn't do. There's really simple songs that I hear and go, "That's brilliant." I couldn't have written them, and they're simple.

Clapton, not technically the best guitar player ever, but yeah he's pretty freakin' good. He has tone in his fingers like B.B. King or Buddy Guy. It's true that some of these guys have become larger than life and could never live up to the praise they receive, but lets put things in perspective: Maybe you don't like Clapton or Vai or Satriani or whoever, maybe you can even sit down and learn to play their supposedly complicated stuff, but they didn't sit down and learn to play it...they wrote it. There's something to be said for that.

I'm not saying some of these people aren't overrated, I'm just saying when you're even in that league it really doesn't matter. If you're in the Clapton, Vai, Satriani, Petrucci, whatever league, where your name is consistently mentioned in the same sentence with the words "best ever..." you're probably not shitty.

People say Shakespeare is overrated. I say, how can you overrate Shakespeare? Different ways of thinking about it I guess.

I always thought Buddy Guy played out of tune and had poor note choice. He always sounded to me like an inexperienced white boy trying to play the blues. Obviously others don't (didn't) think so - like SRV, who was influenced by him. I can't stand his playing (Buddy Guy's).

Clapton has the tone and taste. He's not flashy, but the dude can play, and plays with finesse and style.

I can't stand Kenny Wayne Shepard.

Anyone ever see that Robert Randolph dude SHRED on the pedal steel? I saw him perform on some talk show and he fucking ripped.

careful mentioning SRV in this thread...

I hope to God you meant "I can't stand Buddy Guy's playing".

I had the SRV strat and emulated his playing for years and years. He was a God.

I lost "Caught In The Crossfire" - his bio - which sucks. Fantastic read. I'll buy it again.
