no use slamming anyone... over a stupid thread like this... taste cannot be argued...

well anyway what i ment is with RR is like the daddy of hammett is that they sound similar and yes RR is better that's why i didn't say Hammett is the succesor of RR. ore like hammett is the bastard son but IMO hammett shows the same talents... the again i would like to add that i normally hate solo's like megadeth (damn they suck!) and i just do not get how you cannot like the early solo's of hammett. i mean have you heard Orion or Sanitarium well the list goes on i guess it's taste but you cannot say he hasn't got feeling damn i wish i had that little feeling in my pinky...
and damn i wish i knew how to use punctuation and spelling.

guhlenn;)

ps seriously, have you heard Orion fromthe master of puppets cd?

I too am wondering about Clapton. I have tried seriously with an open mind to listen to a bunch of his music. But I haven't found anything yet that impresses me.

His greatest hits seem to be based on simple riffs which he repeats over and over during the song (Layla, Beautiful Tonight). Not that this cannot be okay, if you look at him as a composer. But as a highly rated guitarist? So far I have heard nothing I couldn't copy.

I am much more impressed by the shredders. Yes, there is a lot of show off, and after a while you get bored. What they should do is to be in a band with vocals and then have a occasional solo. Then it would really work wonders. Little is more.

My own preference is Mark Knopfler. Not that he is difficult to copy. But he is in my opinion very inventive and has played a lot of different styles. He is great at creating licks that sound so good that you can't resist picking up your guitar and try playing along with him.

true spoken! i also have a weak spot for the guitarists of Rammstein. if anyone knows 'm... they play easy as hell metal riffs but they are tight!!! MAN!!! honest live it's just like the cd. an example to all the "lead" guitarists that cannot play a decent rhytm part.

Slash

Very true Xipe,
I can't deny Slash's heavy blues. It was quite refreshing to hear those riffs in of all the scaling copy cats of the mid 80's.
Speaking of dry scales, I bought a Steve Morse instructional video & was not impressed. He can burn but 180 to my taste. It was probadly the production. His tone was thin, vibrato suked & the scales were just too damn fast (like a card flipping on a bicycle wheel) And that guitar, more pickups than a Chevy dealer's lot in Hicksville, USA.
Speaking of instructional videos, Eric Johnson's Total Guitar. That video moved me. His tone was awesome! It suks now.
And Clapton, Cradle is the best thing since Cream. Everything else sounds like a bluesy commercial jingle.

ME!!!

I used to be pretty ok. After seven years of playing, with classical background, alot of practice (up to a mean of 4 hours a day, for months...), you get pretty good. And people notice that kindof thing.

Wow, deja vu all over again! Are you sure you're not me? I took seven years (or round about that) of classical lessons. My teacher was pushing me to apply to New England Conservatory. Looking back, it's a laugh: unless, of course, I was actually that good, in which case, I'd have a good cry.

Now, after two years of occasionally playing half an hour every three months because of my wrist condition, I really start to suck... But there's a hell of alot of people in my neighbourhood that really don't realize this. :D I'm not gonna tell 'em...

I got the same treatment. Of course, I don't hang with musicians, so that may have something to do with it in my case. I was foolish enough to tell them at one time, but. what the hell... a little praise never hurt anyone ;)

Oh, uh, let's see... I'd say it;s a tie between Eric Clapton and Jerry Garcia... no, wait... maybe Carlos Santana... or, wait... Peter Frampton (although who ever thought he was good anyway? I don't know)....

I watched a cable show on BRAVO yestrerday about Clapton. Man, that guy actually believes the underground graffiti "Clapton IS God" (am I dating myself here?). He talked like the world of music revolved around him... sickening.

Jeff Beck? I read an interview where he said something like he's a better auto mechanic than guitarist. Still, he's done some nice stuff with some great musicians.

God Complex

I think Eddie Van Helen has one. 'Screw the lead singer. Their here to see me.'

I think the whole lot of you who get off on slagging other guitarists off are a sad bunch of jealous fucks. These are guys who had the drive, ambition and skills to get off there arses and go out and make a living doing what they love. How many of you wankers have done that? I'm guessing none. Still, if slagging off another guitarist makes you feel better about your lack off skill/fame/whatever, then go ahead, you sad bunch of arseholes.

So you like every guitarist who has ever happened to sell a lot records and tickets? Every single one? Or are we here to openly discuss our preferences, including what we don't like?

Personally, I only wondered somewhat about Clapton's fame and wanted to know, if I were the only one who wondered. I have at least three cd's by him and tried looking for what was there, but found little.

Envy? On the contrary. There are some very good guitar players out there, famous and unknown. I sometimes bump into guitar players, amateurs or from local bands, who play extremely well. And I have no problem recognizing their skills.

In fact, I find the music business is a tough one, where a lot of talent is not sufficiently paid for. That is one reason why I chose to play it safe and just become a doctor. Playing in my spare time makes my life richer. I am happy with that. And I don't envy those who took chances and got rich or famous. For every one of them, there are at least 99 who are just as good, but never had much luck. (If fame really is so wonderful after all).

Tomburr, my comments were not directed towards to people who are stating opinions about who they like and who they don't like. It was directed towards those that are slagging off other guitarists with comments like the below :-

"Via is skill over substance" (and if you're gonna slag someone off, at least find out how there name is spelt)
"Steve Vai's music is just a bunch of show off licks and no style or self-expression"
"Slash may be the worst guitar player to ever be a 'rock star' "
"I'd have to say Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine is very over-rated.
He's "all-effects" and no technique.
Sadly, kids worship this wanker. "
"Yngwie Malmsteen is overrated!
He'll probably be playing his arpeggios and scales in 550 bpm any day now, and he still won't be able to write anything pleasing or catching."
"Kirk Hammett is overrated!
He wouldn't survive a second without his beloved wah-wah, and IMO most people have more musicality in their little finger than this man has in his whole body!"
Etc.

If you really need to slag someone off, then there's plenty of valid targets in todays manufactured talentless pop crap like Britney Spears, Five, Atomic Kitten etc.

Ok, talk about underrated then...

Malcolm and Angus Young...
those two, especially Malcolm... are underrated.

And WTF are those replies playing for seven years about? get a fucking life, brag somewhere else where people are impressed.
This is a guitarist forum, drive that by your g/f's for greater impact.

Phil G, you're just ignorant. What's the name of this thread? We're doing this because WE CAN! I'd love to be an over rated guitarist & be criticized. Who wouldn't want to shake the skilled hand of Steve Vai (THERE! I SPELLED IT RIGHT!!)? Also, getting there has a lot to do w/ the right place & time. Would the Beatles have made it if it weren't for other circumstances & meeting the right people??

And it's not the guitarist who over rate themselves, it's the freekn' media & record companies that shove it down our throats & make us write these threads. Go post a "Get off your ass & be over rated" thread, don't waste our time.

Xipe...

Shut up. i like to here the stories of fellow guitarists. be nice to people. how long have you been playing? if i couldn't play my guitar anymore and had done so for 7 years (well what a ya know i play for 8 years!) i would tell anyone cuz taht's plain sour!

so shut up or show some respect!

guhlenn

steveaustin - You're an arsehole. Fuck you!

xipe - You're an arsehole too (although slightly less then steve). Fuck you too!

That's it PhilG. Show your true colors. I'll take the high road on this one.
