Roel

That SMART guy.
ME!!!

I used to be pretty ok. After seven years of playing, with classical background, alot of practice (up to a mean of 4 hours a day, for months...), you get pretty good. And people notice that kindof thing.

Now, after two years of occasionally playing half an hour every three months because of my wrist condition, I really start to suck... But there's a hell of alot of people in my neighbourhood that really don't realize this. :D I'm not gonna tell 'em...

What's you're wrist condition ? I've had tendenitis for years but I've learned to deal with it. Guitar playing isn't too bad for me but piano playing really makes it worse. I used to be a dedicated piano player but now I suck. I'm getting good on the bass guitar and that makes me happy.

Do whatever you have to do to make music. Work on your singing or even use a sequencer to compose music.

You're not over-rated. Steve Vai is.

I'd have to say Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine is very over-rated.
He's "all-effects" and no technique.
Sadly, kids worship this wanker.

The guitarist from Creed won Rock Guitarist of the Year for 2000....gimme a break....

ok... no one talks about them anymore

BUT when it comes to overrated guitarists,

SLASH's the man!

Hey wide awake... My wrist condition is something about a ligament gotten hurt a while ago, bones that aren't held together the way they should, rubbing against other bones and artritis in the end... For over 2 years now. I'm a piano player too. Guitar and piano are both killing me. Sax is ok. And singing. Well, I'm gonna take lessons next year...

It's about the same as your piano playing. I used to be dedicated on both piano and guitar, now I suck. But you shouldn't give up... I know a jazz pianoplayer that played his first grade (classical) on the conservatory in just 2 years, WITH tendinitis, while studying jazz. He got rid of the tendinitis after 7 years, just after he got his first price in jazz piano too. And he's awesome... Tendinitis is not a permanent condition!! Mine is... So go see some doctor's. Chiropractic care etc...

Just ignore it... I focus on composition and recording now. And pissing on other people... :)

Tom Morello really sucks... Steve Vai, is ok... when playing zappa songs. :D

Don't bag on Tom Morello if you haven't heard the early Rage material. Dude has more technique than most of us here. He was a many hour a day practicer of shred-type guitar back in the day. Just cause he doesn't frequently play like that now, so what? He does some really creative and cool stuff on the instrument, and it serves the music really well. Do we really need to revisit the whole "electric guitar IS AN EFFECT" thread?.......Or maybe you guys just don't like his politics....Hmmmm.

peace.

Eric Clapton
Yngwie Malmsteen
Eddie Van Halen
Kirk Hammet
Jeff Beck
Jimmy Page

Don't believe the hype!

rats-

Go listen to the Rain Song, Going to California, Since I've Been Loving You, and Wonderful One, and then say Jimmy Page isn't the real deal. I think he is one of the great artists of our times. I shouldn't care if others believe that, but I am amazed that some people don't recognize the obvious talent.

Led Zep put together about 6 great albums in a row. That's an amazing feat for any rock band. Jimmy is a god.

And, rats,...

Listen to Jeff Beck's solos on Roger Water's Amused to death. Perfect.

And Van Halen on Michael Jackson's Beat it, which he actually wrote. He uses more technique in one phrase than I managed to learn on 7 years of hard studying. His songs suck, but he sure can play...

But I do have a video with Eric Clapton, about 2 years ago, on the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, where he's playing with Joe Sample, David Sanborn, and others. After his solo he adds one more lick, sort of a run out... Totally out of tune. Really bad. (One fret too low.) And then the camera takes a back shot, and you can actually see him turn his head in shame. :D That's a killer...

Actually, Eric Clapton is really overrated, I think. He has written some wonderfull tunes, but he's not the guitargod people believe he is. Plays some nice bluestunes, but he's not all that special. There's way better bluesguitarists...

Jimmi Page is NOT God

Steve Vai Is God

Jimmi Page is like Jesus or mabe John the Baptist or something.

Unfortunately they are both like 100 times better than me.

I am overrated too,My friends think I'm red hot but when I'm around other 'real' players I get left behind.
My wife thinks I'm too hard on myself:(

Slash I reckon is over rated I've seen him so out of key too often. I saw a video of eric clapton and he was maken mistakes alot.the video was about 15 years old.

Roel & wide awake sorry to hear 'bout the wrist conditions.

I think carlos santana has done some amazing stuff. But I saw a tele-cast concert 3months ago and he kept playing the same scales over and over

Jeff Beck? What are you, nuts?! Jeff Beck Rocks.

I'll agree thought that Clapton is over-rated, and if you listen to/watch any live Led Zeppelin you'll realize that Jimmy Page is tremendously sloppy...but he wrote some great songs...and that's what it's ALL about.

I can buy that Clapton, since about 1972 or so, has been... less than Godlike...

... but go back and listen to him on that one John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers record, or with Cream, or with Blind Faith, or with Derek & the Dominoes, or any of the guest appearances he made during those years on other people's records, and I hope you will hear why he is not at all overrrated but came by his accolades for good reason.

And Jeff Beck -- overrated? I don't think it's possible to over-rate him. Whatever it is that makes a musican truly special -- touch, vibe, beauty, soul, a "voice" -- Jeff Beck has, and has it all over just about anyone else.

That said... hey, guys, we just did the "overrated guitarists thing" pretty recently... yup, here you go:

https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?threadid=21159

Last post on that thread was 1/26/01... funny that the "underrated" thread started about the same time is still alive almost two months later while this one stopped...

Slash may be the worst guitar player to ever be a 'rock star' Listen to the crap on the 'Hendrix Tribute' - My 15 year-old nephew has more taste and better chops (not to mention that he plays in tune!)

Jimmy Page (by his own admission) does not figure in the guitar hero stakes. He says he doesn't rate in those stakes, but that he plays with great passion - an assessment I completely agree with.

Clapton isn't a shredder - but he's not trying to be. He has great voice leading, and ALWAYS a killer tone, plus the right note at the right time.

Don't know the guys name, but the band he's in is called "Faith No More" When I saw them on TV, I thought they were a parody of a rock band.

Which is true, I guess. :D

Well... Faith no more is no more... Never really liked them. Didn't dislike it either. Just neutral.

But you really should check out the original band of their latest singer: "Mr bungle"(That's the name of the band. Mike Patton is the lead singer.) Awesome. I've never seen a band doing such crazy things live. Perfectly synchronised. It's 20 times the kicks a normal band gives you on stage. HUGE!!
It's also 20 times the number of licks and time signatures a normal band uses. Very nice... One of the best alternative concerts I've ever seen. Well... The best.

So, Clapton is always the right note at the right time aye... You really should see my video. :D

Jimmy Paige is sloppy yes, but sloppy like a fat wet kiss from a beautiful woman. Yes its not techinically perfect, but its the style in it. If you want someone rechinically good at the guitar look at Yngvei, he shreds like a fiend, Steve Vai would lick the bottoms of his feet, but they both suck. Cause they're music is lame, its just a bunch of show-off licks with no style or self-exspression. Thats my 5 cents, I put in more than 2 ;)

Steve Vai's music is just a bunch of show off licks and no style or self-expression?
What the F$^K are you talking about. What Vai songs have you actually listened to?
I'm sorry but when I hear people say that about Vai, I just assume that it's envy talking.
Listen to For the Love of God and The Crying Machine and tell me there's no self-expression there.

Now joe Satriani on the other hand bores me to tears, apart from Midnight which just absolutely amazes me.

And that's just my 10 pence worth (way more than 2 cents with the current pound/dollar exchange rate).

I'll agree with the Joe Satriani thing. and the envy thing, yes I wish I could play like that, but I hope I'd have the self control not too
