i might me getting hold of a mosfet powered amplifier custom made for village roadshow company.....

does anyone know if mosfet amps are alright/good for monitoring?

Cheers,

Daniel

Four things to check out:

1 - Make sure the power rating on that amplifier is in the same ball park as your monitors.

2 - Find out what impedance load the amplifer is designed to drive (2, 4, 8, 16 ohms), then find out what impedance your speakers are (probably 8 ohms). If they match, you're okay.

3 - Some amplifiers are purposely designed with a non-linear frequency response, that is, they accentuate certains frequencies because of what they are used for (guitar amps are a good example). If possible, find out if the frequency response is fairly flat. For monitoring purposes it is essential that the amplifer not hype any particular frequency.

4 - The last concern is noise and distortion. Amplifers built for monitoring typically have a very low noise floor and very little harmonic distortion. Your amplifer sounds like it was designed for PA use and probably sacrifices fidelity for power.

Hope this helps.
