More variety of preamps better?

i wouldn't say having more preamps is "better"...but it can certainly make things easier

like mentioned before, it seems as though the tendency is for multiple tracks to start exhibiting the tendencies of the preamps used...for example, i've been doing projects that run close to 30 tracks, all recorded with the onyx preamps...and while i find that they sound pretty decent, sometimes it'd be nice to have something else for a different tonal variety, which is why i plan to add a GT brick, ART MPA gold, and a couple of the rane ms1b's to my rig. for $600-700, i'll have another 5 channels of preamp to choose from for guitar/bass/vox/whatever, as i'll probably continue to use the onyx pres on drums

This question is purely hypothetical, probably silly, and comes perhaps of drinking too much strong tea before breakfast:

What result would you get from chaining two preamps together in your
signal chain? Silence? Explosion? Electrocution? Led Zeppelin?

certain death.

going into one at mic level raises the level to line and going into another at line level might cause some problems but you know...try it. amps definitely color the sound. even if it isn't staged properly the distortion could be rad.

remember when tvs had those fine tuning knobs? i look as mics as the channel switching and mic pres as the fine tuning.

Try it and see what happens.

I've never done it on the way in, but I will send bass D/I tracks to a preamp when I'm mixing.

probably quite a bit of unwanted noise/buzz/hum or what have you, depending.
