I'm sure this won't happen to everyone, I might suggest a " try before you buy " approach...........

da MUTT

You should try before you buy. I agree. But, listen, the only guys you hear that got bad mics are the ones who got bad mics. Last month GC sold over 400,000 Oktava mics. Yes, their QC is not great, but I have 2-319s, 2-MK012s, 1 ML52, 1 MKL2500 and 1-219. All bought over 5 months and all great mics. I auditioned many each time I bought and did not find a bad one in the bunch. That is 7 mics, at least 35 mics total tried at the store with %100 success rate. Maybe I am just lucky, but the GC salesman did say that they had no higher return rate than anything else they sold.

400,000!

How on earth could they test that many in the first place

Only if all 400K went to the same GC each month :D

How is it possible to make that many mics in one month? Never mind sell them?

Well, I don't know how many Oktava mic's GC and everyone else sells every month, but I bet it's a lot... and I haven't had any problems my Oktava mic's.

400,000. Where did you get that information from?

In my travels on the internet, I read a story about the very low prices of Oktava mics. In the story they quoted as saying that All guitar centers/Musicians Friends sold 400,000 mics in one month at the height of the last sale. This is the month (Sept) that I got my MK-012 for 2/$99. They were reportedly flying off of the shelves all month long. The manager I was talking to said that the buyers actually go to Russia and basically buy everything they have. The Oktava factory is HUGE. Realize that my factory manufactures a technically equivelent product to a mic (same #of parts and assembly steps) and we pump out 500/day. Our assembly staff is 10 people.

It must be bloody ginormous if they can pump out that many in a month

What do you make?

I can't find the mk012's on musicians friend's website anymore. Did they stop carrying them?

I think so... but, you can call MF toll free at 1-800-391-8762 to make sure.

We make Interpolators. Nothing to do with music, unfortunately. My last engineering job in the music area was DBX in the glory days (1978-1982) The thing to remember about Russia is that the formar communist government only allowed one gov owned factory to produce a product. There was 1 mic company, 1 TV company etc. So, the factories that still exist in Russia and the sattelite countries are really huge. Kinda like Raytheon here in the US. They also pump out many hundred of thousand firarms per month.

I heard the rumor about GC discontinuing the Oktava line. I have no idea why, but I like them alot. So, I got the MKL2500 last friday to round out my Oktava collection. I got nervous because MF has no listing for Oktava anything. GC management told me that the 219 is gone, but the others are still active. I think that the stock is still there and they will announce the discontinuence when thay are gone. Just my thought BTW. If you want any Oktava, get them now for cheap.

is that right? only one company?

what about lomo and byetone and nevaton and so on. some are east german maybe?

seems like the USSR ended up having a handful of mic companies. just like the USA.

dont know much about this.... but it seems like russian mic companies are pretty interesting and have interesting histories.

i know, much like the USA they "borrowed" a bunch of German tech...

Does this apply to ALL Oktava outlets, or just to GC/MF? :(

How is the 2500 doing? Did the tube get broke in?

Also, how much gain does the 52 appear to have compared to say, a SM57?

The only other one I know of is the Sound Room. Thinking about it though, if GC stops carrying them, you know someone else will pick them up. They might even get cheaper!

I wonder why the Mackays and GC have ended their relationship?
