more body out of the snare and toms

When i record drums and mix the snare and toms in songs, i loose any ring or body really that the drum has. All you hear is the attack.

For snare i use a 57 and ive tried it from all different angles and distances, ive also used a bottom mic too but didnt really get the results that i was looking for.

I want that nice DUH! sound for the toms... you know.... DUH DUH DUHHH.

Ive used 57s on each individual tom, ive done a condensor over the rack toms and a 57 on the floor. Pretty similar results, i just dont feel like im getting a full big sound.

maybe there is a mixing technique i can try diffently? ive been thinking about getting MD421's for the rack toms and a beta52 for the floor, and the beyerdynamic that everyone likes for the snare.

any thoughts?

what kinda set-up do you usually put on your snare?

You need a very well tuned kit, good drummer, great room and good overhead sound.

I don't think you need all of that. It will make it easier, for sure, but if you aren't a good drummer, and you don't have a very well tuned kit and good overhead sound, you work harder at it.

The well tuned kit thing is accurate. If you don't know how to tune your drums, learn. If they sound like shit before they're mic'ed, they're not going to sound any better recorded.

If you have a crappy room, you have no choice but to deal with it.

If you're not a really good drummer, at least KNOW THE ARRANGEMENT AND THE SONG, WELL!!!

If you're getting too much attack, back the mic's off the drum a little.

Just a 57 on top same as you. This thread http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=244842 has a tune with the snare done as I described. Might not be the sound you're after but I was looking for something crunchy

Do the drums sound like that in the room? If they do, try some room mics.

WOW e-mailed sweetwater... the guy called within less than 10 minutes from when i hit submit on the message! he said he could get a M201 but he would have to order it from the manufacturer and charge me shipping, he spoke highly of the audio technica ATM450 it does look pretty good and gets some good reviews, Warhead... i think thats his name on here, has alot of good sample clips from it.

However i just placed an offer for a M201 on ebay its brand new, the TG series. But ethier way, if i get it or not i will always consider the ATM450 if i have some money to spend
