I use the speakers that came with my computer to monitor my tracks. They are real crappy. I find having to use my headphones a lot, but I feel I am still not hearing my mixes as good as I can be. I am planning on getting some real monitors real soon, but my question is this: Will the monitors just plug into my soundblaster platinum card (is that even advisable) or my Behringer MX802a mixer? Or will I need to get another piece of equipment (similar to a stereo receiver) to hook the monitors to that? The mixer has control room outs - where would those go? It's such a little mixer. Any help is appreciated!

Hmmm...

I have the same concern...
It depends on what soundcard you have... some do.
Generally they go into a mixer.

You have basically two types of monitors-active and passive....active has their own power, passive needs an amp of sort sort to power them.....with active monitors you can go straight from the soundcards line output to the speakers or you could go through the mixer so you could have volumne control, whatever suits your needs......with passives, same situation except the amp is inserted in the chain right before the monitors....

Any suggestions on monitors/amps?

I have the soundblaster platinum sound card btw...

I use Event 20/20 Bas (Bi-Amplified System) monitors for my studio. they have balanced XLR inputs on the back, and can be connected to any sound source with the right adapter.

you will need to convert the stereo minijack to two XLR outputs to connect them. beyond that I would recommend getting (as finances allow,) A digidesign Digi-001, whigh has a monitor output, on the back of the breakout box, for which there is a volume pot on the front panel of the BBox.
