What some good, cheap, Active near-field monitors? Right now I'm using computer speakers, so anything is basically an upgrade.

Wharfedale 8.2a's are pretty good. They're what I use. $350. I got mine for $300 because someone returned them or something.

Event TR6 i find acceptable as far as the monitoring situation demands

PM me if you're interested in the TRUTH's. I've got a pair I need to get off my desk, don't have much use for them after getting my EVENT 20/20's.

I picked up a set of Tannoy Reveals (2 x 85 watt) with a poweramp for €300 on Ebay... excellent deal. Don't give up on passive monitors, you might miss something good.

I think American Musical Supply is still selling the Hafler TA1600's for half off. $150. Very nice amp that will perform as well if not better than most budget powered monitor's built in amps.

Take a look at the Alesis M1 actives they are really nice and have always gotten good reviews from what i read....they do an excellent job for me as well!

I would recommend my set-up highly from a value for dollar perspective.

My set-up is a pair of unfortunately discontinued M-Audio BX-5's with a M-Audio SBX Powered Subwoofer. If you can score a pair of BX-5's on ebay or some old stock somewhere, do it. They have more setting flexibility than anything else in their price range with switches for high frequency boost or trim by 2db, acoustic space cutting by 2 or 4db, mid boost on or off, and low frequency rolloff at 56, 80 or 100 hz. They are very consistent in their reproduction without being hard on the ears.

You can see them and the studio they are located in by clicking the Bass Clef icon in my signature.

Monitors hook up to the rack or something, right? ;)

I'm looking to give my M-audio BX8's a good home. My new Dynaudio BM6A's are sitting in their box at my home as we speak and I am about to pee myself at work. :o

Soon they are going on ebay unless I decide to keep them for a secondary pair or entertainment system or something. Let me know if interested: reddog1299 (at) hotmail (dot) com

fhkng downtown Reggie.... i can feel the force...yoda and his bro's our on your side,...well, not ON your SIDE..not like attached to you physically,
but like well, you know, like behind you and pushing you to move forward...
in a good way, not like in a shopping mall at christmas time type of pushing you forward...anyway...you know man, you know... "pee'd on yourself", i get it...excited, joyous...not literally urinating on oneself....i can dig it, i know what you meant to say probably.

6A's. the only negative thing about them is you can't blame the monitors anymore for a bad mix! :p

like the drunk said .."the bar has been raised!"

Hey! I've never made a bad mix anyway! :D

like the drunk said .."the bar has been raised!"

From that post, I take it you know of this firsthand. ;)

if you do a search on the TRUTH monitors, you'll quickly find out that they have a very big penchant for blowing hi-horns.

i'd go with the events, or like maybe mk1-mk2's or something.

Reveal passives are a nice deal (picked mine up of eBay for $200 brand new). I've owned a pair for about 2-3 years and am powering them with a Hafler TA1600 - great combo, and my mixes have translated well. The Reveals are pretty honest.
