I need to get some monitors or speakers for my little home studio. I read that monitors under $500 are not even worth it and I should just get book shelf speakers. I would like to keep the cost to under $200. This is for a home studio for very much a newbie.

Just need some suggestions and opinions. Thank you.

Who said that monitors under $500 are not even worth it? Is he an idiot? If you're smart, you could easily differentiate mixes done by speakers and monitors.

maybe not cheap flat bookshelf speakers...but i use a high grade sharp stereo to monitor with.

really...i'm fairly pleased with how it sounds. i believe the stereo was 450 or something. really nice stereos may color the sound..but i just have it on flat eq and without any bass enhancement and it does well for critiqueing tones by frequencies that i hear.

they're not $600/monitor setup...but for a new guy...definately an open route to go.

the Swan M200 or swan S200a. Trust me on that. I already reccomended them one time..You wont find anything that touches them up till you get around 500 bucks for the blue sky media desk system.
the swan s200a is the new version of the m200...you can find them...www.audiogon.com or ebay or newegg or directron or tigerdirect...

I've been really pleased with my Tannoy Reveals. Snagged them for $200 brand new of eBay a couple years ago (I consider that a good deal). Might check eBay for a pair...I have the passives hooked up to a Hafler amp. These were under $500 and certainly not a waste of money IMO. I've been able to get some good mixes - but that could be the case on any set of monitors. You get the "feel" for them and learn how to work your mixes.

Wharfdales are/were popular around these parts in the last year or two as well.

Just to give people an idea, I started with maudio bx5's and also a nice bookshelf system. I could never get anything on the bookshelf system to translate, however the bx5's would only take me 4 or 5 passes. Good monitors on the other hand get me where I want to be in one or two passes.
