$100 wont buy u 1 good monitor let alone a pair get a good pair of headphones (also hard to find for that price) i have the hd280s by senisser those are said to be the best in their price bracket but Im unsure I use them and Im ok with them only kuz Ive had them for so long

Um.......................

The arguments in favor of headphones seem to make sense, but isn't it dependent on how the end user is going to listen to it? Should music be mixed for cheap headphones, ear buds, car stereo's, PC speakers, or home hi-fi?

If it's mixed in a neutral environment (i.e. flat response monitors) then it should sound good on any setup. That's the theory anyway.

Get the headphones first and then save for monitors. But get good headphones...you might as well.

Definitely get a good pair of monitors when mixing. Our ears interpret these in different way. With monitors, you can hear how your sound interacts with the air.

Yeah, but with headphones, they will always sound the same regardless of location.....and you can learn to mix with them....a good argument for home recording people using headphones (rarely will we have a good room for mixing in)

Headphones are better for long distance work, their lighter weight means they can be thrown farther. The downside is they require lots of speed to penetrate the skull of even the smallest prey. Your aim must be good and your arm strong.

Monitors, on the other hand, can crush the skull of the hardiest opponent with almost no effort. The downside is that you need to be close. This opens you up to counterattack, and requires stealth to be effective against speedy prey.

Pick your weapon, paint your face, pierce your genitals, head into the bush.

Come back with meat, or don't come back at all.

Dm-10

There's great entry level monitors...entry level doesn't mean they suck or is it a piece that is embarrassing to admit ownership to. Roland has the little DM-10's which are great and may be more pleasant than headphones to use. And you can always keep them for your computer in the future if you upgrade and believe it they make awsome computer speakers!

cans are a good start

Before you need monitors you will need cans to record with, remember to buy phones with as little coloring as possible.

cans over monitors? why? I would take monitors over cans personally

im surprised this is still open.
Anyways I got a pair of sony mdr-nc6 there descent around 50 bucks with noise cancelation.
But they were free so I couldnt go wrong.
I noticed off the back they picked up hisses and breathing that my cheasey speakers and other headphones werent.
Im going to wait a month or two and try to get some used monitors.
My budget is 120-150 might save a little extra but I doubt it, I got fired today

those are some real limited choices but you never know what you might find on ebay used for monitors
