First, I'm gonna tell you which products I am looking at, and then if you want, you can read on to get an idea of my goals in recording and my experience yada yada.

Budget right now: $100, so headphones I am going to get first, then a few months down the road when I'm getting ready to mix my current project, I should have some more money to put into them, albeit still not a whole lot.

Looking at headphones:

Sennheiser HD280 Pro
Audio Technica ATH-M50
Sony MDR7506
and AKG K240

Monitors considering:

Wharfedale 8.1 ProActive or possibly the 8.2s (diff is a 5" driver vs. 6.5")
Alesis MKII
Behr Truths (which is better, the ribbon tweeter version or the cone tweeter version)
M Audios (really haven't researched them too much, just know they are in my price range)

For headphones, I have been leaning towards the Senn HD280 Pros on the recommendation of a few audio engineer friends, as well as personal satisfaction with other senn products. I am kind of in the dark about monitors, the only monitors I've ever mixed on personally have been the krks my gf has, and I really really did not like them... just sounded boomy and muddy.

I am a home recordist for my personal music only (occasionally do demo songs and such for friends). My only goal in recording is to get my songs down in the exact way I envision them to be played in tracking (or as close to that as possible), and to have a good enough quality of sound in the final master that it does not interfere with the listeners ability to hear the songs in the way I intend them to be heard, and in reality, I strive to acquire a certain quality of recording that compliments the songs rather than merely "presenting" the songs. I use full band instrumentation, and though I do use bass and drums in almost every song, my recording style can be likened to Elliott Smith's (cept the pro tools part... haha) where there is bass and drums, but clear highs of the guitars and vocals are at least equally important if not slightly more important.

Blah dee Blah dee Blah. Sorry guys, It's late, I'm getting wordy.
Basically, I have a pair of Senn 212s and have been using them without many qualms for the past 3 years (yes I know there is a huge bass boost, but I bought them unknowing, however, I have gotten used to them and know how they translate), and I actually used them to track my most recent full length release, and then mixed on a pair of krks (don't recall the model,,, they weren't cheap like,, 600 used). I didn't like the krks, way too bass heavy, and muddy. Even still, with tons of reference listening, it turned out good I think. I would still prefer a fully circumaural can with a flatter response.

My ex and I jointly invested quite a bit into our recording projects. When we split, she took the krks, I took the digi 002.

All input is appreciated. If you wanna hear what kind of music I make as it may lend itself more to one model of headphones or monitors than to another, you can check it out on myspace.com/nathanponzar. Don't have to though, just in case you are board and are looking for something to justify staying up for another ten minutes lol.
