>mic and digital cable, not speaker, but the same concepts are applicable

sjoko2: Don't mean to pile on here but the differences available for someone to hear between shabby and da kine mic cable and shabby and da kine speaker cable are orders of magnitude apart IMHO.

Yeah- I took a few semesters of physics. But my overall opinion is more based on experience connecting wires between amp and speakers via various cables and between source and pre using various shielded cables. There's lots more exposure to degradation of signal in the path using the shielded cable.

I hate to open this baby up but I'm about to buy some cables. A lot of discussion here about the signal you hear, etc.; but what about what you don't hear (or want to hear) - - noise.

My question is whether any of the premium cables are more quiet than the other. In a quiet passage, I want to hear nothing.

I'm talking about Mogami (quad or intrument) vs. Monster (500 or 1000 series) vs. Zaolla vs. crap (eg Hosa).

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Roy- What are the cables for? Line, mic, balanced, unbalanced, how long of a run? Those are all factors.

These cables are for going directly in a DAW (D1600 specifically) from a guitar or mic. They are in the recorded signal path.

Thanks.

Aahack...chough...aahack.... chough... chough...

Damn, who kicked up all the dust?

Hey, I remember this thread! This is the one where the race driver laughed at the car designer because he wouldn't believe that painting flames on the body could make the car go faster.  ;)

That's dumb. Everyone knows if you want a car to go faster you paint it black because it will heat up the air around it :D

Roy- If you just need a couple cables then go for some good ones. keep the guitar cable under 10-15ft for best sound quality. With mic cables you can go a lot longer before they noticeably degrade the sound.

I usually go with the higher quality ProCo's or Horizons. Avoid cables with molded ends.

From a testing engineer

My brother used to work for Belden wire and cable. Their test engineer decided to test the differenence in wire. The test was done in one of the finest test facilities in the US. He WAS NOT looking at professional large scale sound reinforcement systems. Just smaller, more conventional setups. (I.E. studio set ups etc.)

He tested Monster cable against other good quality standard stranded cable. He ran frequencies of 5hz to 100,000hz through 25' of wire. The difference between the Monster cable and standard cable of the same guage was not measurable down to 6 decimal places at any frequency.

What he did find was you have to use high quality connectors and good soldering techniques when mating them to the wire. Cheap connectors made a huge difference. While he did this all on his own for fun. I wish he had documented it. It would have been a nice resource to have.

For a studio setup--buy good cable, good connectors and properly make your connections. You won't see any difference.
