hello all,
I've got a pair of M-Audio Studiophile SP-5B's that are about a year old..

just the other day, the tweeter in the one started making noise/hiss really loud...

I checked the cable, but it is still there when you unplug the cable.

These are powered monitors, so I turned the gain on them down all the way and it didn't go away.

sound still comes through the tweeter, but this noise is horrible. The only way to get it to go away is to turn off the monitor.

Any advise on how I might try to see what is wrong?

Well, the amplifier is obviously broken. If you don't know how to fix electronics, you'll need to learn alot before you can fix it.... :(

I agree with regebro that the amp must be causing the hiss. As far as fixing a problem like that it could get pretty technical..

why do you guys say it is obviously the amp? on another forum just today a fellow replied to me it could be:

"Leaky cap, bad solder joint, fizzled IC, and a bunch of other possibilities. You've got two choices, send it on for repair, or get ahold of the schematic and an o-scope and troubleshoot it yourself, working backwards from the tweeter."

why do both of you guys immediately rule everything out and say it MUST be the amp?

now I am not an electrical guiness, but if it is the amp, then wouldn't turning the gain on the output of the amp all the way down have stopped the noise?

No, because you would be turning down the gain on the input, not the output, if you turn it down on the back of the speaker.

Umm, these would mostly be problems associated with the AMP.
Hello!

I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and assume you're not going to try and fix it yourself?

Well anyway, I hope this is not a common problem, as I have had a pair of these myself for about a year!

no I don't plan on trying to fix it myself if its the amp... I was looking for the warranty information the other day on these but can't find it... I don't think they are still under warranty, so I was curious if someone could help me pinpoint the problem so I could have an idea if I could fix it myself (replacing tweeter and stuff like that I can do...)... I don't mess with amps though.
