Ok, I'm the type of person who can usually figure things out on my own, but this time I am in desperate need of some help.

I am in the proccess of creating a respectable bedroom studio, and will be doing all my recording/mixing in the box. I currently have an new iMac and a set of Tannoy Ellipse 8 monitors sitting on my large desk, but need to raise the level of the monitors up about 8 to 10" (the tweeters are very directional in their vertical dispertion). I thought about moving the desk out further from the wall and getting some stands for the monitors to place behind the desk, but then my 24" iMac would be in the way and what would be the point of my large desk?

I guess my question is, does anyone have any suggestions for stands/risers that I can place on my desk to bring these up to the correct level? It doesn't seem like anybody makes monitor stands for this height. I'm up for any and all suggestions.

Can you shoot a quick picture on here to help visualize ?

I wish I had one. I'll try to get one up here in the next day or so. The desk is 30"D x 30"H x 5' W.

What kind of "foot print" measurement could you allow for a stand on the desk ?

Put 'em up on stacks of books until you figure it out. If you use books you never read, it may be a couple years.:)

That's so crazy it just might work. This sounds like a job for the "Hardy Boys"...

I'm looking for the same solution! Want to raise speakers off desk to ear height. Suggestions welcome. Was gonna wall mount but don't want to drill into speakers. Was thinking wooden shelves but don't want the resonance so latest thought is 8" stand. Any recommendations. here's what current setup looks like..

Grab a saw and some wood, probably cost you $20, I don't know how much that is in metric money.:D

About 2 euros I'd say!! :D

Looking for a metal stand to cut our resonance if possible.. Othwerwise I'll be going for the saw and hammer and a lash of wood option!

I've been messing around with this issue at home as well. My latest idea is using concrete blocks under them--the kind that are like 5 or 6 inches thick and about a foot long like you can get at Lowes, etc--and then put some Mopads on top of that. My desk is a little wobbly, so I figure something solid and heavy like that will help prevent it from resonating; and the foam pads will help any vibrations between speaker and concrete block. I'm gonna use some leftover black canvas fabric to pretty up the blocks so they don't look too ghetto. :)
I would rather use stands off to the sides of the desk, but there just isn't quite enough room to keep them out of traffic.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I just happened to find a company called "Wood Technology" that makes stands in this height range: 8", 10.5", 12". They aren't made for studio monitors per se, but rather for floor standing home theater speakers (to bring them off of the floor). The top plate measures 8" x 8" and the base is ~ 10" x 11". There is a ruber pad on top and some rubber feet are included. This is the model I'm purchasing:

Hope this helps out.

Very cool. 51 bucks though? Yeesh...

I suppose its cheap for me to build them seeing as I already have the tools and a small wood pile laying around, as well as screws, nails, etc etc... but still :p

I had the same dilemma. What I did was 1)buy some shelving wood from home depot 2)buy some Auralex mopads.

This not only raised the height of the monitors buy about 3 inches but also allowed easy monitor positioning for the best angle (the shelving is wider than the desk, but not longer)

could make some of the DIY stands, but cut the tube down. Probably $6?$15?
Those drain type tube speaker stands... somewhere in a post

I bought some small plastic open sided crates, the ones that look sort of like the old milk man crates.
Some of the larger ones kids use at college for building bookshelves.

Anyway, these are about 8 inches cube, cost about 3 bucks each.
I have a mouse pad under it and on top and my speaker sits on the mouse pad. Decouples fine!
Gets my speakers right up where they need to be.

Here... look at my picture (second one actually). This is what I mean:
