Where do I go in Home Recording for discussions on speakers? I did not see any sub-group that specifically talks about speakers. Is this the right forum for monitors or should I find another BBS forum to ask questions about monitors?

If you are asking any type of question from a beginner's viewpoint than this forum is the right spot for it.
What kind of questions do you have?

Monitors are most commonly discussed in the "Other Equipment and Reviews" forum, under the equipment forums.

Also check the "Other Equipment and Reviews" topic. There are many monitor threads in there.

I have just purchased a pair of M-Audio BX8's (130 watt, 8", active monitors). I would like to add a subwoofer.

The M-Audio SBX subwoofer at $400 seems a little dear. (120 watts, variable cross over, 8")

Does anyone have an alternate suggestion for an active subwoofer that is a little more value oriented? However, I realize that in order to get a quality tight bass, I might have to pay up.

Thanks

Earl

Why not sell or return the M-Audio's and buy better monitors right up front rather than spend more money on a sub to add-on to what are, at-best, only very mediocre monitors?

You have a good thought. Do you have any favorite monitors which the price is less than $1,000 for a pair?

Thanks for the reply.

braveheart, unfortunatly, there is no perfect set of monitors. Every individual monitor has a different frequency response, meaning that it will boost or cut certain frequecies in your mix rpight off the bat. A lot of pros will have more that one set of monitors in there control rooms to listen to there final mixes. This is because you might get a good mix in one set, but when thrown to a different set of monitors, you may find that it is lacking in high frequencies, or there's not enough low end. So really, although there's no such thing as a perfect set of monitors, you can create a perfect mix by listening to it on many different sets.

Now, this can be expensive, especially when starting out. What I would recommend for you is to get a set of cheap computer speakers from Wal-Mart or something and keep the M-Audios you have now. Get your mix sounding as good as possible on the cheap speakers, then throw them to your M-Audios and tweak it from there. If you can get it sounding good out of the cheap speakers, it will sound great in the nice monitors.

don't think a sub for the BX8 will tighten it up.
very few subs are "tight" and generally used for 60-80hz and below settings/crossover. (the rumble and film explosion stuff)
i have a sub on, maybe a check once i'm 75% ready to burn one. like having a pc speaker set, for checking the mix.

but with your cash situation, <30days BX8's... go get some others and try...whats to lose!
IMO, you should be happy with your monitors for at least 6months!
now if they just sound like sht to you..by all means get some different ones, you shouldn't have to fix them already.

how did I choose??
i record Hiyan Yodeling. This is just me and a SM7 with a Joe Meek Channel strip into a 2488. Passive JBL Control 5 with Tascam PA150. (and a JBL sub only for checks, last 25%)

Playing my Hiyan Yodeling Mix and adding a heavy reverb it sounds like your on a mountain in Sweden, if done correctly.

A/Bing speakers this helped drive my choice...i could hear more! not only more reverb detail, tails of the fine mountain reverb sound fading off....into the sunset fog.
but my dog would start howling with one set...so i knew!!
one set was probably hitting like 30Khz!! "That's IT, those are the ONES!!" i said to myself...awesome! :)

do you have a dog?

hehehee, good luck & have fun

To blue, rrian, and cool,

Many thanks for your input... good advice.
