monitor set up

I was wondering what's my best bet on monitor set up? I'm using Event PS6 and was wondering should the monitors be standing straight up or laying sideways? And how far should they be from my ears, any speacial angle or height from the ground. And is a sub-woofer really important and if so how do I positon it. Thanks.

Straight up. The distance between them should be the same as the distance from the speakers to your ears.
