Can some experienced studio owners spare some advice on setting up monitors and amps. Not in the sense of acoustics, i.e. placement, but in terms of how to match the power rating/efficiency of a speaker that that of an amplifier, how to avoid damage to the speaker, etc...

In my specific case I am going to be using passive speakers with 60W/120Wpeak power handling. Will using an amplifier rated beyond the maximum power handling of the speakers keep the amp from clipping and damaging the speakers with DC (increased headroom)? I am not quite clear on how the amp can be overdrived by speakers that have a power rating that is too high. Is the speaker itself capable of receiving more than 120W? If so, isn't headroom on the amp a danger in itself? Where does the monitor level control of the console, or amp input source, come into play?

I do not believe the concept is that difficult, however it is twisted in my head right now. Thanks to anyone for their help in clarifying this.
