ive got an AT4033. i want to replace my overhead mics. should i buy another 4033 or a pair of mk012s? ive got a pair of mxl603s as well. i dont like them for overheads. ive used 451's and some b&k's and i really like those. too much $$$$. so another 4033 for $200 or a pair of mk012s for $350?

if you don't like the 603's as oh's, it's not likely that you'll like the mk012's.

I like the oktavas( totally different sound than the 603's) as overheads and I like the 4033's too! You can't lose either way but since you already have a 4033 get a pair of oktavas now, they have a bunch of other uses too.

If what you didn't like about the 603's was a bit of harshness, then you'll probably like the 012's better. They're more natural sounding than the 603's.
They should make the cymbols a little less edgy.

another bit of advice saying the 603's are way different than the 012's. the 012's are great.

i'd go the 4033. i had a pair of those once and they worked well for overheads...just heavy!

i don't find them compairable at all.

any whooooooo,

as much as i love my mko12's (and i do)
the 4033 is a better workhorse.
in my personal opinion and all that.

so 4033's make nice OH's? better/equivalent/similar to possibly SM81's, or 4050's?

I found the 603 to be a little brighter and boomier. They sound very similar to me. I like the mk012 better because it doesn't sound as hyped as the 603 but to my ears, they are similar enough to use one in place of the other.

Have you directly compared them? I think some of you guys might be fooling yourselves. :D

I don't record drums, but If you can pick up a 4033 for $200 I'd say that was a no-brainer.

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay different mic...yes i had a pair of both.

i think the 4033 is better overhead than the 4050...just me 2 shillings.

I like 4033's as over heads but with the wrongs cymbals, they can be a little harsh. The 012's can be more forgiving in that application. I do think the 4033's are more of an all around mic though. Decent on vocals, GREAT on acoustic guitars, good in front of an amp, etc.

Speaking of 4033, has anyone used both the old version and the reissue? I have an old one before they were discountinued, and I'd like to get another. I'm just wondering how much difference there is between the two? Of course I know that it is very subjective, I'm not looking for opinions between the two, just wondering if it would be "smart" to try to use them together (old and new)

Sorry for the hijack.

thanks and one more thing...

i think im gonna go with another 4033.

i have another question. do you like sm57's more on toms or those audix D-series mics?

never owned the d series, but don't like 57's for toms.

i've used the d2s (i think that's the name) and prefer 57's for the better attack. the d2 is cool...but they sound too tubby to me not matter how high up i got em.

but you know you could prefer the d2s for that very reason...i'm not a big fan of the 421 thing on toms...i prefer more attack to tub.

Mike

the d2's are so-so on toms...i own and use them, but will probably replace them with something else later on. the only reason i really ended up with them is because i wanted an i5 and D6, and the audix drum mic kit wasn't much more than buying each of those individually

the d4 is a better mic, IMO...gives more of a "boom" where the d2 might come out like a "thud"
