A thread over at gearslutz.com got me started researching the difference between these two Oktava mics. Turns out that mics with the MK were originally sold as multicapsule versions and the MC were originally sold as single capsule versions. This is the only difference between them and supposedly they are the same mic.

Which brings me to the question, "Why is GC selling MK versions with the single capsules?" unless possibly these are 2nds that were refurbed and repackaged with the single cardoid capsule.

I don't trust Guitar Center,,,,,,,,personally. Always had that feeling after I had purchased something that I had been ripped off after I left. And not necessarily price wise,,,,,,quality wise,,,,,hmmmmmmm can't really pinpont it,,,,,,,but as far as the Oktava's go,,,,,,,,I've heard,,,,,,,,dont know for a fact,,,,,,,,,but I've heard that the GC Oktavas are a bit iffy,,,,,,,,,,,,most people have told me to try out 3 or four of them before you purchase,,,,,,to make sure they sound good.

Which in my mind,,,,,,,means that they are not to the highest quality standard,,,,,,

Choice is yours my friend. Good Luck

It's not Oktava quality that's a problem, it's quality control. There's simply a lot of variation from mic to mic. The ones that are good are very, very good. I think quality control has improved a lot over the last 4 years. I think that has a lot to do with Taylor Johnson busting their balls about it. I think your chances of getting a good Oktava randomly from GC are better than they used to be. I also believe that you should use the mic before you
buy it, just to save yourself the trouble of returning it.
And I think GC broke up a whole lot of 3 capsule sets so they could sell the hypercardioid and omni capsules together as "capsule kits". Different designation, exact same mic. I still shake my head over the various GC horror stories, because the 3 in the Boston area are pretty good stores, where I have bought a whole lot of kickass gear. My God, they've got the B.L.U.E. Kiwi marked down to $1600! No quality control problem there.-Richie

I bought 9 inall. All are good quality of build, and sound great. I love them, but then again I tend to look and listen to the product and not the millions of idiots who parrot the same old information.

Well

Sorry, I wasn't "being and idiot" , I was speaking from personal experience, if you read the thread properly. I have been satisfied with most of my purchases from GC,,,,,,but the times I have purchased defective gear, and/or wasnt happy with what I got,,,,,,they put me through a lengthy and needless process of waiting and encouraging me to fix it through them, charge me for it etc etc,,,,,,,,,,,for things that were not up to par.

By the way did you buy the OKtavas with the optional capsules, or just the standard cardioid models?
