Eternally Striving
I know this is a recording forum, but how do these do live? I'm kinda interested in them right now. I love oktavas as it is. Are these really bright like some of the other oktava mics?

The MK-011 is very flat and has the deepest off-axis rejection of any Oktava mic. So its not as bright as the well-known MK-012 and offers greater gain-before-feedback in live use.

Awesome. I've been wanting a good personal live mic. What's the differences between your mod'd mk-011 verses retail. I'm using this for vox btw.

bump - i'm really interested in this mic - anyone here ever use it live on voice?

Although the MK-011 was developed as a hand-held live performance mic it seems most of my clients are using it for instrument recording. So I perform both acoustical (single layer headbasket) and Premium Electronics mods on the MK-011.

If you're used to using a hand held vocal mic with an "extreme close mic'd" technique (lips almost touching the grille), I'd recommend leaving the stock headbakset in place. The stock headbasket has several layers of nylon mesh, foam and wire mesh to reduce pops. Of course like any mic that does this the downside is some loss of high frequency articulation.

Because the MK-011 is so flat and accurate with the potential to have a very extened HF response (with my headbasket mod) I think of this mic as probably being more appropriate for non-pop music. Think of a jazz or classical singer working a mic from about a foot away and below the mouth.

Also, most singers know and are used to the SM-58's presence peak centered in the 7-8kHz region. The MK-011 does not have this peak. Some singers might find it lacks an ability to cut through in a way they are used to as a result.

But the MK-011 is a great mic. Whether it would be great for you depends on your technique and what you're looking to hear.

Thanks for the reply. Basically I just want something that sits well in a mix, has a studio mic sound and can be used live. I figured a condesor would be the way to go and I have a few oktavas that I'm pleased with. So I looked at this one. I do use close micing for my vocals. I sit behind a piano and have the mic usually with lips within 2 inches of the mic. Maybe I'm looking for the wrong mic - any other mic suggestions under this price range (i've found the mk011s at 250 new)
