Captain Sea Boots
I want to buy both an audio interface for my Mac and a mixer. Right now I only have money for one, so I am looking at the MOTU828mkII. Their website says it can be used as a standalone mixer. Clearly, this won't be as functional as a hard standalone mixer, but do you think I can use just that for my live mixing for a while?

Ummmm....

I wouldn't recommend it. For one you have no interface, for two you have no bussing capability, for three I trust computer systems about as far as I can throw them. Also, you don't get diddly for preamps, no phantom power, and no XLR inputs.

I've been burned too many times by computers (twice) when it comes to recording... hence my move to an all hardware digital hard disk coupled with an analog front end.

You could try it, but anticipate loads of irritation. For recording you can get away with--lots of people do--but for live sound... I dunno. I wouldn't want to mess with it.

MOTU828mkII has bussing capabilities, 2 preamps, phantom power, and 2 XLR inputs to the best of my knowledge.

I was thinking it was more similar to the 2408, but...

2 XLR's isn't going to get you very far in the world of live mixing.

Maybe I am confused here. If I already have other preamps I am using, why do I need XLR inputs? I realize it will be a wiring nightmare. I also assume most places I will be playing will have their own board and sound system. That's why I am thinking I should sink my money into the audio interface for now. The mixer is just a nice extra feature, and I am wondering how useful it is.
