Mixing with headphones OR monitors?

Is it better to mix with headphones or monitors. I find that mixing with my headphones leads to the final mix sounding much different on the monitors, from everything to the individual track volumes in the mix to the final effects (reverb mostly). And if it is acceptable to mix in headphones, which I would prefer to do based on my need to keep things relatively quiet for the rest of the house, what are some headphones in the <$300 range that I should be looking at.

Adding to that, you can't hear phase releationships in a mix while wearing headphones. They're not made for mixing on. Checking mixes, checking fades, listening just for the helluvit, sure.

Thanks for article. It all makes sense. I'll just have to kick the wife & kids out of the house while mixing.

Just one other thing that they can get pissed at me for (did I say that?).
