Hello There,
I'm a Cubase 6 user, what would be the best additional mixing plugins you recommend to get a professional mix?
Thank you
Chity

There is no correct answer to that. Anything added for FX to a mix is based solely on what is needed. EQ, reverb, compression, limiting are standard things used.

EQ's and compressors. The stock ones included with Cubase 6, leave much to be desired as far as having much for character. What style of music are you working with? It is just my personal opinion, but I would recommend Waves API Collection, and PSP Vintage warmer and pretty much any of the PSP EQ's. A free compressor that I like is the Density MKII. I recently purchased Stillwell 'Transient Monster' and am loving it on snares.

I think, You can use the Cubase 6 or Pro Tools 9. I have both and the best combo is PT and Logic.

If you can't get a decent sounding mix with the stock plugins in your DAW, getting third party plugins is not going to help.

It's not the tools you have, but how you use them and your sound is only as good as your source. These are the golden rules.

Cheers :)

+1. This is definitely true.

it's not plugins that give you a 'pro' sounding mix.

you just gotta spend the time building up your knowledge.

I agree Gonzo. eq and compression won't do shit for you unless you

a.) know how to use them on a technical level

and

b.) know how to apply them and make them adapt to various styles of music.

Or c.) You get incredibly lucky. :)

Thank you all for all the great tips and advices, i am sorry couldn't reply earlier as i am out of my country. i totally agree with you all that the ears are the best plugin tool:)

well, i think the point is, there is more worth in skipping the plugins, and focusing on just the basics:

1. good tracking skills.
2. good arrangement skills.
3. gain structuring.
4. track EQ
5. Track panning
6. sub groups (bussing) to move into advanced mixing techniques.
7. using the most basic reverbs, delays and compressors to the maximum effect.

then, you move onto specialty plugins.

if you have the money, get bundles......

look at Waves, Komplete, Universal Audio, etc....

if you don't have bucks, and are building one plug at a time, the very first plug i'd recommend is a good limiter or leveler.

i like and use WAVES L2.
but any 1176 or LA2A emulation would be a good start.

having a computer that can handle all those plugins building up on multiple tracks, is just as important as the plugins themselves.

but in order of individual plugins, my personal order of importance is:

1. limiter
2. linear phase multiband compressor
3. multiband linear phase eq.
3. wide band compressor.
4. deesser
5. delay
6. reverb
7. stereo widener
8. bass enhancer.

Cubase 6 HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED!
I used to use it a lot. It LOAD of plugins on it. It would not help me.
Then I switched to pro tools. I ve been trying to get my mixes right with only PT stock plugins ever since. Not having to go through an insanely long list of plugins is actually healthy and will make you focus on music.
As far as I can remember, Cubase has in line parametric EQ. You can do ANYTHING you with those. It has good convolution reverbs. Good delay section. good multiband compression. Compressors are ok. I don t recall seeing a lot of things that give "color thoug" like distorsio boxes or tape emulation or warmth emulator (but these are for "the gentleman who has everhything")

I an nut shell, cubase has what you need inside. You do not need anything else to make you mix sound good. And certainly not the waves suite, nor the UAD cards, nor the PSPs, nor anything else... When you get better at it you will feel the need to have different colors of compressors and stuff like that.

By the way, if you guys want to check this video, FAB is doing an entire mix using only PT9 plugins.
