mixing q

I have recently started using all outboard gear and this has created a question as far as signal routing..

I am using a tape reel and also a Layla PC interface. If I am running outboard compressors, equalizers, etc, should my path be

tape-->gear-->mixer

or

tape-->mixer(insert-->gear)

or does it not really matter?

I notice that I usually have to put the gain on each channel on my mixer between 9 and 12 o'clock.

I don't think it makes a big difference. If you have everything going to a patchbay, it is more convienient to insert things. It doesn't matter.

For effects like delay and reverb, you are best using the aux sends on the board. You can return the effects to extra channels and take advantage of the EQ and routing posibilities.
