Mixer without inserts

I have a Tascam M-30 mixer, which is bereft of inserts at the input. Each channel has a:
-Send/Recieve;
-Tape in/Line in;
-Direct out/Cue out.

There are also Busses with:
-Send/Recieve;
-Aux out/Line out;
-Individual Buss inputs;

There is also...
-Submix I/O L & R;
and Monitor out L & R.

How would I hook up a compressor when tracking, in a way comparable to how one would use an insert if I want to apply compression for drums, bass, etc? What's the workaround?

I am aware I need the manual for the M-30, but I haven't done it yet. Money order goes out to Tascam this weekend... and I realize this is kind of asking for an elementary lesson in signal flow.

Anyway, thanks for your time!

I'm betting the send/receive jacks are an insert point on separate jacks instead of one. Just use two cables instead of an insert cable.

That is very sensible at a glance, isn't it? I'll bet that's a working answer- after I get hold of a manual I'll find out where this Send/Recieve comes and goes in the signal flow.

An insert is before the signal hits the mic preamp, doesn't it?

Inserts are typically after the preamp and before the EQ and aux sends. The send and receive jacks are most likely your insert points. This is actually better because you get fully balanced insert points and better routing options.

Ok, that's nice to know! The jacks are RCA though... but I'm gonna live happily with it.

Thanks for the helpful replies!
