Mixer with on-board FX better than using FX box?

I have the Behringer 802XENYX mixer, which I really like, and also have a Digitech RP50 effects box for my Squier Tele. I'm thinking of getting the Behringer 1202FX mixer that has built-in effects, but I know I can just use the Digitech box with the mixer I have since the Behringer 802 has FX send/return. But, for only 99 bucks for the 1202, wouldn't it be easier to use that model's on-board effects, and likely sound better than the RP50?

The RP-50 is optimized as a guitar effect unit rather than a general multi-effects processor. The built-in effects on a mixer may be better suited to more general use on vocals etc., but even that will be somewhat compromised compared to a dedicated outboard effects unit.

If you're recording to a DAW then outboard effects aren't all that useful. For most sources you will be better off adding effects during mixdown. Guitars are sometimes excepted from that because the effects are more part of the performance.

Tough call....
- if you set the guitar pedal correctly you can get decent effects. But you may not get the variety of vocal effects that a built in unit might provide. The guitar effects would be fine of course.
- for $99 I'd buy the mixer if you can afford it. Convenience of both in one unit and you could use your pedal on your guitar again.

Sounds like a plan.. Thanks to both you & Boulder Guy for the responses.
