That's 1 of the few things I like about the
Alesis is the elimination of patching for multitrack use as it contains direct-outs
for recording.

I want to get a cheap mixer to use for input to my Fostex D-5 DAT machine. The analog inputs are 3-pin XLR. Is it a problem connecting this to the RCA outs most small mixers use? would I be better off with 2 ART Tube MP's than with a Behringer MX802A?

Think about a Mackie 1202. A good workhorse. It'll have RCA, balanced/unbalanced 1/4" and XLR outs plus inserts on the first 4 channels that can be used as direct outs. Lots of debate on this subject but the mic pre's are very good as well (IMHO).

The Alesis Studio 12R has the same (XLR Ins instead of Outs), with phantom power, and *8* channels! And it's cheap. Nyah!

Having said that, I don't track through the Alesis these days, ever since I got the ART Tube MPs, because they sound way better than the Alesis solidstate preamps. Nowadays, it's mic > ART > compressor > recorder when I track. I do use the mixer for mixing with outboard effects, though.

Thanks guys. I should give you a little more data. I don't want to spend $400 if I can avoud it. I have a Fostex DMT8-VL which only allows 2 channels of input at a time. I can run the digital out of my D5 to it and get 4 track simultanious recording. I have one Tube MP. I was going to get another and use them for mic input to the D5 and use the DMT's mixer for line level inputs. Then I saw I could get a small mixer for about the same price as another MP and thus get more flexibility. However if the D5 isn't going to like the mixer's RCA outs, I'll just get another MP and do the MP to Comp to DAT trick. So any sage advice will be appreciated.

have you checked out the little 4 channel mixer available from behringer ?? quite a nice little unit (key word 'little') but it sure has what you need .... if thats to much then i think radio shack makes a mixer !!!!!
