hey, im using a Shure sm7b mic, m-audio DMP3 preamp, and m-audio bx8's monitors...i record only hiphop vocals..and play no instruments..

im just wondering if i need a mixer...i kinda want some nobs for the equalizing but i know that i can do this on the PC....how much would a mixer benifit me? would it cause a latency problem since im routing the signal through a preamp AND a mixer? would it dim down the quality since it has two pieces of hardware to go through? i love my preamp and defininantly want to use it....

also, if i would get a mixer, what is one you would recomend? i dont have a huge budged but around 200 sounds good..thanks yall

If you're only recording vocals, you might as well stick with your current setup. A mixer would only be beneficial if you had multiple tracks going into your computer. Unless maybe you have a multiple out soundcard and want to route tracks from your computer back out to the mixer for physical mixing (i.e. vocal track, drum track, etc).

If you want physical knobs and faders but still use you plugins on your computer, you need a CONTROL SURFACE, not a mixer. A control surface just helps you control your computer programs parameters. A decent cheap one is the Behringer BCF2000

hmm maybe your right...i might need a controler surface..so what kind of things would i be able to do with a control surface for example?

but the faders are just volume levels..what else can it do besides volume control?

You can buy a 4 channel mixer for under 100$ even cheaper on ebay,

...i think we have already established that i do not need a mixer....

right?....
