Yes you do need an Interface if you Plan on recording to your PC/Mac...

The VLZ pro is just a Mixer Not an Interface.....If you don"t want to have to Buy a seperate Interface then Buy a Firewire Mixer like maybe the Mackie OnyX 400F but it doesn"t have as Many Preamps as the VLZ or maybe one of those Alesis 16 Tracks Firewire Mixers which will let you record 16 tracks at once to your PC through the Mixer, It is a Mixer and Interface in One for about $600...

You could also get the VLZ Pluss something like a M-Audio Delta 1010 then you can Output from the Mackies Channel Inserts from the Preamps into the Inputs on the Delta 1010 and you can also Group certain Inputs so a seperate Buss and output from the VLZ to the Delta 1010.....

I use a Simple 8 Channel Mixer to Mix my Drums and output in stereo to my Delta 44 into Inputs 1 and 2, i then can Input a Guitar into Input 3 and a Bass into Input 4 and record Live Drums Bass and Guitar and then Overdub Vocals and as many Guitar and Bass ect Tracks as I want.....

Cheers

Watch out with the delta 44, I own one and i have the same mixer as you and it isn't compatible with my computer or something and I could never get it to work.

Contact M-Audio Tech Support, or do some research as to why the card won't work. As far as not compatible....unless you are running windows 95, or just don't have PCI slots, the card should work if you follow the install procedures. Maybe it's just a defunct card. As long as we're talking analog signals and devices, if it's an analog signal from a soundcard, any analog mixer should accept it and play it just fine. Defeats the purpose of having it if it doesn't.
