Mixer -> Cables -> soundcard

I've searched the forums for this topic, and there's plenty on it, but I'm still not sure I understand.

I just bought a Spirit mixer, with 8 channel inserts, to use with an 8 input soundcard (probably will be a 1010lt or a phase 88).

Yes, those'll work. Keep in mind that Hosa's are pretty cheap and will break internally over time, especially if you're patching/unpatching them a lot.

Yeah, I was arguing with dumbass from BSW once who was basically have had no problems with them in my own studio they must be fine. All I can say is that he's on borrowed time.

Stay away from Hosa!

what about the whole balanced unbalanced issue? that's the main part i don't understand.

RCA connectors are always unbalanced, and if you're using the inserts at the first click, then that connection is unbalanced. And that's totally fine. I used to send singals to my Tascam 38 the same way and I never had any noise issues.
