mixdown/noise reduction

Yeah that is where I took mine also. That was the only place I could find to do it. I know that the guy who worked on mine also does a lot of work for Arlen Studios in South Austin. I think they have a couple of Studer decks there, and he is always doing their maintenance for them. So, I guess he has a fairly good idea what he is doing. It did take forever though for him to finish doing mine. He changed some bulbs out as well as calibrating, alignment, whatever. It took like four weeks at least to get it back. :confused:

Needless to say, I would like to know if there is someone else in Austin who does work on reel to reels. :)
 
I think Pyramid Audio is the only legit, STORE that has that kind of skill.

There's gotta be at least a dozen or so guys in town who know how to repair them on the side. Fred Remmert of Cedar Creek Studios in Austin knows his Studer like the back of his hand. As I recall, he used to have an Otari much like yours, and he made it sound GOOD. Dialed it right in. (One of the techs at that studio told me all about it.)

You may try calling the studio, better yet emailing them, and ask Fred if he can calibrate your deck for you. NO IDEA if he'd be interested, or what he may or may not ask for the favor, but he's a good guy. I'd at least offer him a 24 pack, or 50 bucks, or SOMETHING.
 
a few thoughts:

-have you been keeping the machine clean since it was calibrated?

-what levels are you getting on the VU's when you record?

-what kind of tape are you using? what was it set up for?
 
-a brief sidenote on this particular machine-

This machine seems so much more space-efficient than the lay-back models! The only thing I HATE about the second series Otaris is the sheer square footage that the machine takes up! That much space isn't REALLY NECESSARY for a 1/2" 8 track. It'd be way cool to find one of these machines some day.

I'm using quantegy 456 tape, and I told the guy to calibrate the machine for that specific tape. One thing that concerned me though was that he never asked what kind of tape I was going to be using. I had to call him back and tell him. It made me a wonder a little bit.

Yeah, I've been cleaning the heads in between every couple of recording sessions. Other than that though I haven't been doing a lot of cleaning.

Also, do I always have to take the tape off when I'm done recording and store it? Might be a stupid question, but most of this stuff is new to me. :D

The VU's have been a bit all over the place, because I'm still in the process of learning how to get the right levels. I usually try to get it right below 0 db, and then sometimes it might go over a little. But is there a specific level that I should try and shoot for... or just go by the sound?

Yeah it is fairly space efficient I guess. I hope you can find one too. I've never used the newer version, so I wouldn't know how bulky it is. I wonder what the sound quality difference is between the two. Also, do you know what model of MX5050 this is that I have? I always hear MKIII, etc. and I don't even know what mine is... :eek:

It's a MK1.

..it's either a MK2 or MK3, AFAIK they both have the same layout. But you can see the difference between yours :)
