I'm guessing a lot of you guys would never put the words "punk" and "great recording" together.

It just so happens that I like punk and I love a good Rock and Roll record. In this case, my favorite mix has always been "Let's Go." They decided to spend more money than time and recorded a 23 song (or so) record in six days at a more expensive studio.

But besides punk, what about We're only in it for the money by Frank Zappa? Or Lumpy Gravy? He put a lot of stuff on those few tracks they had at the time.

OK, i'm not really into the Beatles but I understand they did most of thier stuff on 4 tracks. Me, sitting at some songs of over 70 tracks and my shit sucks.

OK, anyone hear the Elton John Live with the Melborne Sym. Orchestra? ug, great live recording.

Um, I think Billy Korgan gets some nice guitar sounds. Ava Adora anyone?

NIN for production. Trent is my idol. Now I know most dont agree here but I dig his emotional vibe and it comes through in his recordings. I have a hard time being angst without sounding like Im trying to be agnst, he doesnt. I suck.

Brian Eno.

Brian Eno.

Brian Eno.

Did I mention...

Brian Eno?

Brian Eno.

And whoever does Jethro Tull's stuff.

"Madman Across the Water" is an excellent song, both in creation and production. There is a version on "Tumbleweed Connection" that is simply amazing--I wonder why they needed to re-record it.

That Van Halen crunch in "Everybody Wants Some", mixed with those EXCELLENT drums (as with Hot For Teacher, etc.).

EVERYONE HERE NEEDS TO LISTEN TO THE ALBUM "Loveless," by My Bloody Valentine. Amazing. It would fit everyone's taste here on HomeRecDottem.

Bob Mould has some excellent production on both his solo work and Sugar ("Hoover Dam" is a great example).

The Pixies have a good sound. Vocals incomparable (has more to do with Frank Black than mics, though).

And if anyone gets a chance, listen to Moxy Fruvous sometime. They're a Canadian Barbershop Rock Quartet far beyond their time (and i'm not joking here. Bargainville is a great album).

BRAIN EMPTY

BTW, on this note: Its not just the mixes but the production. While I love all the VanHalen stuff, I am a drummer by trade. Been playing since I was 7. While Alex is a great drummer, his drum sound blows. However, this is subjective so don't slam me.

The best overall recording/mixing/mastering job I've ever heard is the Puzzle cd by Dada... circa 1992.
The guitar tones are killer, the mixes are perfection, and the vocals absoloutely rule. Every song on this cd is crystal-clear and full of life. A beautiful mastering job.
If you haven't heard this cd, or haven't heard it in a long time, give it a listen.
It's awesome.

A lot of Al Stewart's stuff was amazingly well recorded for the time. Thumbs down on Boston's Third Stage--the album liner notes are too self-reverential for my taste. They obviously worked it to death until it lost all signs of life and turned it into bubblegum. I'm not a country fan but in general Nashville recordings are very good. Listen to Mary Chapin Carpenter. Also Sheryl Crow--lots of great guitars and amps--lots of vintage tones.

As for big guitars--Ministry, Metallica.

Oh yes--Frankie Goes to Hollywood--absolutely brilliant. And I'll definitely second the vote on Roxy Music--Avalon. Broke all kinds of ground there. Too bad it's overplayed, but Dark Side of the Moon is perfection from one end to the other.

Yeah Dark Side of the Moon is so perfect...

Man this topic is as old as monty :)

Disentegration by The Cure- yes again perfection.

As far as tones you have to hear Big Head Todd and the Monsters "Strategem" - kinda boring tunes though.

I like the feel and the mix of Blood Sugar Sex Magic.

As far as production My favorite (next to Disentegration- and I'm not a big Cure fan BTW) Is Ritual De Lo Habitual- Janes Addiction, that delay on the voice is brittiant! The mix can get a litte edgy though. I'd love to remix that album- man that would be so...

Ritual is pretty much my reference point as far as what I listen to to compare. Or if I'm doing acoustic stuff it's Ani Difranco all the way- I love those tough acoustic tones.

Two of my favorite recordings,

Art garfunkle, most of solo stuff, very nice recording, and production.

Nirvana Nevermind, I think set a new standard for recording quality, of that kind of music, at that period in time.

James Taylor's stuff is also well recorded, I think a lot of his newer stuff has too much bass though.

As far as older, well much older recordings, I allways thought America's first album was the best recording of acoustic guitars I had ever heard. This was another album I thought set a new standard for recoding quality at the time.

As far as records, remember them I allways thought Warner Bros. allmost allways had everyone beat, soundwise.

I think way back when, 8-track cartidges, minus the hiss, and wow and flutter, sounded much better than records. I had a Thorens turntable with Shure V-15, bought Electric Ladyland on record, sounded like shit compared to 8-track, shouldn't of, but did. Much more distorted, much less dynamic. Live and learn!!

Incubus's new album "Make Yourself" is great. I think I might hear some digital clipping now and then. On purpose?

Also, Sevendust's albums both sound pretty amazing to me.

Perfect Circle.....beautiful!

Wow... nice tread

First of all: S8-N; If I had to pick one, and only one, band to listen to for the rest of my life, it'd be Bosto....err...Mr.Bungle!! They are unbelievable. They play any kind of music, and they do it well, and it all sounds great.. and...they have Mike Patton..

My fav mixes are:
Faith no More - King for a day
Slayer - Diabolus in Musica
Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve (and if you haven't heard Meshuggah yet..*sigh*)
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity
Entombed - To ride, Shoot straight and speak the truth
Metallica - ...and justi....NOT!!
Rage against the Machine - First album
Testament - The Gathering / Demonic
Most Bob Marley albums
Portishead - Dummy

*phew*.. there are too many

Jeff Beck 'Wired' clicked on at the same time I hit this thread. I like that album. It also has the same producer/engineer combo. And, that drummer rocks.

This thread is old.... revival at its best.

Boston

I have an old 70s mag which has an interview with Tom Sholtz. He says the first album was recorded in his basement almost 5 years before before there were any actual members of the band. He played all the instruments. He used an 8 track Scully converted to 12 track. The giutar on More Than A Feeling was a 100 dollar Yamaha recorded with a cheap dynamic mike. One of his interviews can be heard live on yahoo , chek it out.

So Many

Wow, there are so many of them that I like.

Aside from those already mentioned...

I love the sound of the Cult's "Electric"
I really like King's X "Dogman"
Jeff Buckley "Grace"
I like just about any Foo Fighters mix.

I'm a huge Van Halen fan, but I'd have to agree with whoever said that Alex Van Halen's drums sound terrible. I never did like his drum sound either.
