Gleaning mixing knowledge from the Ed guy (sonusman to you) I can sum it up by saying you need to know that curvy thingamajig (Fletcher-Munson to you) that relates the frequency of a sound to the corresponding hearing sensitivity in the average humanoid. Then you need to recognize the distribution of sound frequencies in any particular passage. Mixing problems occurs when too many voices compete for the same spectrum space in a mix. They get along great when each voice has its own space.
Piece of Cake, huh?

Piccillos go to the left.
Kazoos are panned hard right.
Eddie Van Halen (Eddie Van Halen to you) comes all the way up front and about three feet off the ground.
Drums and tuba should blend with all pariphrial instruments.
If I'm on vocals, bury me way in the back somewhare.

What was the question?
