Well with digital, floor noise is pretty much a non-issue and volume and gain are the same thing.I know.
My point is if you're going to export your mix from cubase then open it in, say, Wavelab - then you limit the mix and or compress it with out normalising to -1dB, aren't you just limiting and compressing the noise of the mix. I realise volume and gain are not the same thing, of course.
The reason I ask is because I'm not actually sure why I normalise mixes. I was just taught that way.
When you normalize a wave you add volume across the board that brings the loudest peak up to 0 dbs.
When you limit or compress you are knocking down the highest peaks and raising the average volume higher than you can normalizing.

Fletcher Munson curves are a set of graphs which show how the ear perceives equal loudness at different frequencies. So, between 1-3K where the ear is most sensitive, a tone would be perceived as louder than maybe 300Hz where it's less sensitive
