Mix contest

Did anyone get a chance to listen to the mix I posted? :(

I might repost a new mix on Monday, or should I say post a remix.

The unplugged version, nice job, sounded good.

Backing vocals are too low IMO. Just loud enough to make you wonder what's going on in the background.

I listened to yours right after finishing my own. As far as I could tell, the main differences were that you stereoized the main acoustic guitar, and you did a better job than I of getting some "thwack" on the snare drum. Very nice sounding overall.

Oh, and the sibilance on the vocals didn't seem to bother you as much as it bothered me. :D

How about someone take all of these disparate mixes and master them into one album.
Only if there's some way to get the 24-bit, uncompressed, unprocessed wave files to them. I think it would be foolish to try to "master" the .mp3 files that everyone has posted.

please post what your mixing with or on, program/hardware wise...

thanks, a tally should be close, don't you think? or should this contest be extended? a little? next Sunday? or dead line set? donno, not my gig... who's running this show anyway ;)

your thoughts please...

I think it was decided way back on page 1 that there would be no deadline. Something about people being busy doing real work, and not being able to get to the "fun stuff" right away.

How to judge.

I wanted to listen to what everyone did to compare them. In order to get a method to compare I chose to load all of the files into CoolEdit and sync the cursor so I could bounce between tracks one by one to compare sonicly, visually and statistically.

I also used Feurio to load them all into and adjust the levels so they all play back at somewhat the same level.

I like using these two programs above because I can compare the same part of the song quickly without having to go through the intro each time.

Observations.

1. Overall Levels were all over the place.
2. peak to RMS levels were all over the place with some uncompressed and some very compressed.
3. Spectrum was all over the place. Some mixes had nothing over 14Khz at a level higher than -60. Some have signal there for cymbals and some have boosted everything up here( and those hurt.) Spectrum seems to be the biggest diffirentiator once level is adjusted to become a non issue.
4. some are at 44.1khz and some are at 48Khz which can change pitch and speed if you are not carefull. ( dump the soundblasters and get a real sound card guys)

I am having a tough time keeping the tracks straight, the naming conventions ----- I mean there is no naming conventions ----- and depending on the program (explorer, windows explorer, wave editors etc) the names just keep changing to the point of I cant tell who's mix I am listening to.

People using internet handels(fake names) on this board and then using others on their webs where the files are located for download then naming the files differently from that makes it pretty confusing.

The files need to be called.
{mixers name} {revision number} {More-at-ease} {bitrate-samplerate of mixdown} {MP3 encoding rate and sample rate}
or something like that.

All that said, I now have the raw tracks in my DAW and am starting to listen to them. Mixing will start next. Some of the submittals will be hard to beat.

Very nice recording Josh, and a good song, lyric and performance. Thanks for making it available.

Hi

This is a nice thread. Verry good stuff and a good song.
I hear a clicktrack in the background on one of the tracks. Can anyone (FENIX?) tell me the exact BPM? Couldn't find anyone mentioning it before.

Thanks

Henry

There shouldn't be an audible click track in any of the songs. I played drums on the song with a click going into some shure in ears cuz i like the click loud. Sorry, I don't remember the exact bpm. I'm guessing it's around 155 bpm but i'm not sure.

Fenix - a little background please

Fenix-

give us a little background on the song please.

1- Who
Who is Josh Hill - You?
You played drums- are you in the band?
Who played the rest of the instruments?
Is this a band or a studio musician track?
Are you the band or the recording studio or the engineer?

2- What.
What was played first ?
What was played together and what was played seperate?

I finally got the tracks up and am ready to try my hand at mixing.

-Josh Hill is the writer of the song.
-I was originally just putting down drums to his track because he wanted to take the song and make it a full band song. I heard the rest of his stuff and decided I would like to start a band with this guy. So we're currently looking for some other musicians. When we find the right people and we've had adequate time to really make arrangements to the songs, we'll recut "more at ease" and do the rest of the songs as well.
-Here was my involvement on that demo: I played drums, I engineered it, and I will be mixing a final version of it sometime soon.
-Josh is playing all the instruments on the recording except drums.
-Everything was tracked separately. We had a click going and I played to a click while he sang and played acoustic live to the click and myself playing drums.

there's a couple acoustic demos (recorded live with some room mics) on my nowhere site that we plan on producing into full band arrangements as well.

I didn't like this song when I first heard it, but it has definitly grown on me as I have listened to it 8 billion times now :)
I'm definitly a newbie and I've never mixed a drum set so I would appreciate comments/critics/anything.
Here's my mix:

To me (in my shoddy mixing environment), it sounds like my mix is not the worst, but far from the best. Please feel free to rip it apart and don't hold back.
BTW, I love this "mixfest" idea and have already learned so much from it. Let's keep it coming!!!
Thanks for the tracks Fenix!

Damn!

I knew I would be missing something great! I haven't been here for quite a while and therefore haven't noticed that someone finally started a mixing contest for real!! I downloaded all the files and will try to do my best and post a mix as soon as I can, promise.

See you then,

David

Fenix:
Thanks for the information. If understand correctly, everything was not tracked seperately since the Drums,Guitar and vocal were recorded at the same time to click. Correct?

This explains the vocal bleed in the drums, but I will have to listen a little harder for the guitar bleed in the drums cause I did not notice it. Anythow I was thinking that the bleed I heard was headphone bleed, but those cans would have been burning your ears and hair off to bleed that loud.

Thanks:
Philsaudio

PS:
I am in AWE of the guy who can hear the click track in the drums. I wonder if my hearing was EVER that good - but it sure is not now.

Cant get much more stupid than this.

I finished off my mix last night and before going upstairs to cook dinner for my wife I took a comparison listen to the others in the mixfest.

FUCK- I imported the tracks to my DAW at 44.1Khz so my mix was in a lower key, and slower. It actually sounds pretty good, but I want to start fresh and finish it off at the right speed. I may post it for laughs.

Beware--- original tracks are done in 24Bit 48Khz.
