Mix Contest #9

I did another version 'cos I was bored. In this one I found some better-sounding drum sounds which actually came from Cubase's LM7 plugin! I also managed to rehabilitate the "Bry" guitar track by running it through the excellent GuitarSuite JCM800 simulator plugin.

I didn't bother mastering it as hard this time and didn't bother re-eqing the final mix. Bear in mind that I was drinking whilst mixing this on my bedroom stereo and my right ear don't hear so good as the left (I blame the drums) :D

Phil, I will have to listen tomarrow on the monitors. I am listening on the headphones now.

Drinking while mixing eh?

Sir, take your hands off those sliders and knobs......slowly remove the headphones. ....and pleeease step away from the mixer.

Now look into the lava lamp and tell me sir....how many globs do you see?.... :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

M'kay, I have the results from myself and the band...I'm not gunna post them yet because I wanted to know if the other listeners wanna be considered for help judging this..(true and turtle) so that we can take that into account as well.

I just came across this thread about 2 hours ago, so I downloaded the tracks and did a quick mix. If I spent a few more hours, I think it would be radio-ready!

Cool song, love the ending!

Thanks for the review! I'm glad you like the guitars. My main concern with a mix is whether the drums will be punchy enough, especially the snare and kick. I hate when the kick gets lost in a rock/metal song, so I tried my best with this mix to get the kick in there.

I left the fret noises of the bass out, because they were interfering with the groove of the song.

Anyway, thanks again! :)
JDK...You are welkom !!! :D

I know this is over, but thought I would give your mix another listen. You may not want any kind of critic on it now. If not, just tell me to go a make a samich or something. :D

Hey John...it is a cool song. So cool, it is hard to remember to pay attention to the mix, rather than the musicanship and the awesome lyrics. I have to listen several times to get the whole of someone's mix. I listened to yours when you posted, but since it was over, I assumed I shouldn't post anything about it. Anyway, I decided to....

You did not happen to tweak on this mix since you posted did you?, because the axes did not seem to eat up the other stuff as they seem to do tonight with this listen. I remember I was going to post that the main tweak would be to crank up the vox and maybe the drums just a tad.

Intro is strong. The axes sound excellent.

The Vox is immediate before the music. I basically like the low to loud, but that is a preference thing.

The guitars are the strength of your mix, but they tend to bury the vocals in most places and the drums too.

I do however love the panning and how you didn't take away from their powerful place in the song.

I liked the treatment of the vocals too. The delay you used was different.

The bass is steady and seems to fit good. The volume sounds right.

Once again...I think the guitars are the strength of the mix...just overpowering to the rest of it.

Kudos

Moving up for easy access.... we should all be this easy eh? :D

True

Thanks for the critique!

I haven't made any changes to the mix since I posted it. I get that comment on a lot of my mixes at first. I play guitar, I love guitar, and I tend to mix it loud, especially at first!

I did a few things on the vocals to try to give them a little more flavor and help develop the song as it moved along. I thought the performance was a little timid in places, I tried to 'angry it up' with a little gritty overdrive/compression.

I really like the recorded drums, and found them easy to get good tones from, with the minor exception of the kick, which was a little dull and weak. But I didn't end up trigerring anything, so it wasn't too bad!

I'd be curious to read a little about the tracking room, mics, etc., I looked over the thread, but didn't see any info...

Thanks again for taking the time to listen and comment!

You are welkom John. I think that is an excellent thought, about the tracking room and such.

Hey Perdi....Do you think you could oblige the request at some point? I would be very interested too, as well as I think the others would.

Since, after quality of musicianship, comes the quality of tracking, setting the limits for what someone can do with a mix and this one has very little problems to my ears.

You guys obviously have the talent/skills and the tracking was done very well.

Damn I love this song!! When I was listening to all of the mixes on a daily basis, I would go to bed with it and wake up with it and it would not go away from my bwain!

i'm very starving for the results. i am very hungry, very famished. Anybody had Wendy's new $3 value meals?
