Missing chunks in recordings

Hey,

Been messing around a little bit now with recording, but seems like every time I record something and play back, there are small chunks that get dropped out and are missing. I don't know if it's the interface that's dropping these sections or if it's the software I'm using.. I'm using Soundbooth currently, and strangely enough now that I've hooked the interface up, I can't hear the recordings when I play back in Soundbooth, so I have to save them and then play back in a media player.

Any idea what could be causing these sections to drop out?

Setup I'm on...
Dell Studio laptop, Vista, 3 gigs ram
Software is Adobe Soundbooth CS3
Tascam US-144 going through USB2.0, latest drivers/firmware installed
Audiotechnica condenser mic, unsure of model

I'm recording acoustic guitar only, with the mic positioned around 8 - 10 inches from the hole or just above, and I've tried both inputs on the US-144.

Thanks! Let me know if I'm missing any info that could help.

Several things jump to mind
First of all for playback you need to have the speakers plugged into the interface to hear what you have recorded in the recording software. it is using the interface as a sound card and your computers onboard sound is effectively disabled while you are using the interface in the DAW software

Droputs
1) bad cable, try a different cable and see if it still happens
2) bad connection somewhere in the mic try another mic (if available) and see
3) Probelm with phantom power (if you are using a condenser) get some kind of voltage tester to verify
4) too much going on in the computer and the USB is not streaming effectively. Shut down as many background services as possible and disconnect anything else that is using a USB connection that is not essential. If you are feeling really daring you could even go into the hardware manager and turn off any USB ports that are not in use so the system does not allocate bandwidth to them which will reduce the amount of bandwidth available to stream audio

Hi Bristol, thanks for the reply, I'm going to try out some of your suggestions and see how it goes,

Dustin
