Phloodpants and Blue Bear both make good points. ATRAC is a variable bit compression scheme that is technically a lossy format, but is almost completely transparent until you get into multiple generation copies using minidisc->minidisc. I would rate it significantly better than say a 256k mp3.
DAT is lossless but suffers from a lack of oversampling on the tape read, so unlike cd or minidisc when it encounters an error the DAT just gaks in the middle of the stream or produces a dropout. Tape is a non-stable storage medium as we all know, and long-term I've transfered all my DAT archives back to digital and burned to cd-roms.
To me the only real advantage to minidisc over cd-rom is portability and easy management of re-writable media.
