I think you're right, but I gotta get this album out now - it's time. If I had a fluid drummer who wasn't afraid of simple percussion sometimes, I'd leave it to him/her. But as it is, that dead simple kick matches the dead simple bass and guitar parts, and then the whole thing takes off at the end. It works, and that's good enough for me right now.

Despite this, the reason I think you're right is because you've listened to the song enough times with enough attention to spot possibilities in it. Let me know if you come up with something. LOL :)

Unique and very cool song,I liked it and will give it repeated listens.
I have no problem with the notes being played on the synth,I just think the tone was more strident than the rest of the song,I guess what I'm trying to say is I thought it could have been a bit mellower, but thats nit picking.
The vocal lead interlude(?) was definately refreshing.
Great song.

I was going to say that the end had a drstawl-ish sound, and then I skimmed over a few comments while it was playing..

you get an extremely clean sound..

I didn't think the doubling of the vocals always worked.. At times it sounded weird to me.. Maybe harmonies would have worked better than singing the same notes.. maybe not..

The humming type sound gave me a laugh.. This reminds me of music for children.. I mean that as a high compliment..

The synth was cool, again in a 'music for children' type of way.. (compliment dr)

It seemed the more I listened to it, the better it was..

Very clean mix and recording imhop..

fun song! :)

Very cool. I really appriciate the roundness of the overall sound (it seems a lot of folks want to crank the shit out of the high end. This sounds very natural). Doc's part drops right in but I'd want more of it, not just at the end but laced all through it.

Dobro.

You are the best songwriter on the bbs IMO.

That is fucking amazing..... Im not even into that folky acoustic production thing, and I...yes I, was getting goosebumps listening to your song.

I can't find a fucking thing I don't like.

You are amazing.

Joe

PS> Can we have the snare turned up a bit in this....??????

Sorry had to. :)

Please don't diminish the credit given to Dobro with this question, but could you elaborate why you think he's the best songwriter in your book? Do you think a better production/performance is capable, and if so, would that put this song over the top? This seems out of context for you Joe, and I'm curious why it "rubbed your back" so perfectly.

Dobro...you know, I'll give ya a stink about anything....even if it's [contrived] hiss. I liked the solo at the end too from your mate. I thought [as mentioned earlier] that the multipart singing could stand some improvement/changes. ..at least in my book. Maybe replace the kick sound you used with something more ....?..made up?... you know, a homemade percussive sound? not the [synthetic] obvious. Even something as simple as a foot stomp...recorded accurately now, ya know..

Don't worry. I wouldn't diminish credit I have given in the quest to answer one of your questions.

I like the songwriting... I mean what do you want to know?

The guitars were nice.. I liked the layers of the humming sound, or whatever it is..... I mean I don't understand your question.

This song really clicked with me.

A great production for the style.

Out of context?

It might seem that way to YOU, But you don't know me.......:)

Good day to you sir.

Joe

and a good day to you too (or evening, as it may be).

good answer I suppose...thanks.

and I used a poor choice of words in my first sentence. I didn't mean for you to "diminsh" your opinion. I was wanting to say that hopefully my question will reflect that I still liked Dobro's song, yet was wanting to know why YOU thought it was the BEST. Sorry for my poor choice of words....and I'm sure this post will make things even more confusing:confused:

Vox - glad you liked it - thanks for the kind words.

Mixmkr - your're right - the timing of the doubled vocal and the sound of the kick are the two parts of the mix that a good critic notices first. I'll replace the kick, I think. I'll think about the vocals - I'm used to it sounding that way now. :D

IMO

Leave the kick.

You see thats part of the reason I dig it (recording-wise).. It's different..

Sure it's a no brainer to put in a real , or at least more natural sounding kick, Maybe a tambourine also or something......but that synthetic one you have is so unusual in a song like this... I love it.

Joe

Nice tune. It kind of reminds me of some XTC stuff (some of their later albums) ...

Nice vocals and playing and I like the synth solo. It kind of takes this song to a different place.

Real nice job!

>Nice vocals and playing and I like the synth solo. It kind of takes this song to a different place.

Thank You for your appreciation of dobro's original plan. He asked me to take this to a "different" place with a synth tone reminiscent of what Paul's post-Beatle Band did circa "Band on the Run" and I did what I could. I really don't play keyboards. I wrote this part out note by note in an old version of Cakewalk.

The feeling I was trying to mix with this was ripped from Bach's 5th Brandenburg Concerto.

So I'm glad all of that tedious work paid off to some extent. :)

Dobro,

The only thing I can say is: fantastic. Great song. Nice recording. My favorite yet!

Doc + time signature = awesome!

Super cool dobro and doc....super cool.

Ditto!
Very nice. I liked the synth at the end. I also didn't really have a problem with hiss. The vocal trumpets were very cool, infact everything about this was cool. Reminds me of some early McCartney

Just had to bump this up again before it drifts off the charts. A really, really memorable song.

A+

I've just heard this, and it's wonderful. I just had to tell you!

I'm glad you didn't change the doubled vocals - they sound cool the way they are.

I nearly fell of my chair at the trumpet interlude - beautiful.

Keyboard solo was cool too.

If you're putting out an album, please let me know. I will buy it. Seriously - please PM me when it's ready.

Cheers

AB

The end synth solo is perfect and it needs to stay. The mouth trumpet... I see the kind of footloose thing you may be after but I couldn't help wishing for a little more structure and some actual horns (or at least midi horns). The tune is really good and reminded me of recent XTC, which I consider a huge compliment and I hope you do too. Didn't have a problem with the beat and the bass I couldn't hear since I am on the PC. I enjoy an eclectic mix of instruments and styles and I someday hope to incorporate it into my own posts which have been fairly "standard" so far.

I thought I posted a comment here but I don't see it.
This is a great little song. I hear XTC, also High Llamas, maybe. Or is it Sunflower era Beach Boys?
Is that a vintage synth or a softsynth?

Singapore?
