I'm not sure whether this is to do with the Audigy 2 or Sonar3, or simply the battery in my microphone, but whichever it is, I'd be grateful to know whether any one here has experienced "recording hiss" due to mike hunting (ie the computer sees that the microphone isn't picking up sound because there is a bar or so's rest in the vocal part and turns the mike up automatically to find out what it should be picking up!). If there is a way to prevent this in Sonar I'd love to know it. The alternative for me is to delete all "silent" bits in vocal tracks which is a bit time consuming... but whatever will be must be....
cheers...

Use a noise gate, that should do it. In order to avoid this all together, you really need another sound card with a real mic pre. It is the sound card that is doing this to you.
BTW has anyone seen Mike Hunt?

I've only just bought the Audigy 2 - have I wasted my money?

er BTW is a noise gate a piece of software? - any ideas on the best to get?

You should have a noise gate plugin that came with sonor, it will be in the dynamics section with the compressors

If you want better result, use external pre-amp instead the one built in your soundcard! Even cheap small mixer's pre-amp will do better than the one in your soundcard. Why spent hundreds dollars on software, while you stuck with cheap mic / preamp /soundcard? :)

Ps. Mike is there playing his 2nd tenor part :D

What you are describing is automatic level control -- the microphone is designed to try to automatically adjust its gain to get the best signal, which is fine and useful for situations like amateur recording of speeches or business meetings, but awful for musical use. There's really nothing you can do about it with SONAR that will stop the mic from doing this. You need a "real" microphone, or you need to defeat this feature on the microphone if it's defeatable.

No, I haven't, but I nearly had an accident with Carey Hunt. It was a close shave!

:D Q.

Just hunted out a Sennheiser E815S microphone - problem solved.
Thanks all :-)
BTW Mike Hunting is actually the second cousin of Mike Stand....
hmm! Been listening to too many 1970s radio repeats!
