i just got cubase SX, i'm missing something simple
i can record and playback audio fine but if i open a vst intrument and try to record or play it it doesn't work. what are the in's and out's supposed to be..if i use my ardvark card as the in and the vst intrument as the out i can hear the instrument but not record...the out light doesn't light up...what am i doing wrong

I don't have an ardvark card so I'm guessing at the answer. Most likely you need to go into the mixer section of the ardvark software and change the source for recording to 'record what you hear' or something similar. Welcome to the site!

i figured out if i use the mouse in the edit window and play the notes that way, i can record...but if i try to use the keyboard i have hooked up to my soundcard it won't record, i can use the keyboard and hear the VST instrument but when i press record no data shows up

which aardvark soundcard are you using and how do you have your synth hooked into it? Is it with Midi cables? Or are you just rinning audio out's into your soundcard?

General tips without knowing more about your gear:
You should have the keyboard hooked up with midi send and return into the aardvark. Make sure you hve MIDI Thru enabled and you (usually) want the "global control" turned off in your synth. Then in your track editor you want the input source to be your synth, and the output source to be the virtual instrument.

If this doesn't clear it up post more about what your using and how it's hooked up.

i have the aardvark direct pro 24/96
the keyboard i'm using is really old, it's a yamaha psr-500
the keyboard is hooked up to the aardvark with MIDI cables
the "midi thru" is activated under the preferences menu and I don't seea way to turn of 'global control" on the key board
in the track editor, once i've activated a VST instrument my options for in's are: the VST intrument, the direct pro 24/96, my PC's sound card, and "all MIDI inputs"
my options for outs are the VST instrument, microsoft MIDI mapper, the direct pro 24/96, my pc's soundcard, and microsoft GS wavetable synth.
if i have the in set as the 24/96 or as "all midi inputs" and the out set as whatever VST instrument i'm using, then i cna hear the instrument when i play my keyboard, i can record the instrument if I use the mouse and the key editor and play the little keyboard along the left...then it records data...but if i try to play the notes on my Yamaha then I hear the VST instrument, but no data is recorded
it's frsutrating, when i was using the older version of cubase vst this all worked...i just loaded Cubase SX and i'm having problems now
is it possible i'm forgetting somthin simple? i'm so close, i can record if i play the instrument using the key editor but that's not very useful to me

Cubase VST has (don't know about SX) a program with it called setup MME, which essentially tells Cubase what midi devices you have, where they are, etc. Have you run anything like this in SX? Does the manual have a chapter on getting started or setting up that might explain this idea more specifically?

Chris

First, check in the devices section, just under the link to "VST Instrument", the devices is the very bottom one (I don't even recall if it's called "devices" but its the very last link on the pulldown menu where the VST Instrument link is.

Make sure you have YES's on the midi interface your using, you'll have to fine that section, it's not hard.

Look at the mixer screen. Look at the fader; right under the fader there is the option for BUS 1, surrond panning, blah, blah... BUT REMEMBER TO LOOK UNDER THAT AREA. The one below BUS 1, you can click on it and then SELECT your synth, DON"T select your midi interface, just click the synth.

If that don' help, I haven't got the slightest clue what to tell you...

hi frank

what do you mean select my synth? my only options when i click on the BUs 1 area you are talking about are
1) the VSt instrument i've selected
2) my aardvark card
3) my computers soundcard
4)microsoft GS wavetable Sw synth - i don't know what that is?

the only time i hear anything is if i've selected the VST instrument in that box, i just can't record it using my Yamaha which is connected to the aardvark card, again I can record if i use the mouse and press the keys in the ket editor

on an unrelated topic, i tried to reload my old version of Cubase since this is getting too frustrating and it loads fine but I get this message when i try to open the program
"procedure entry point SMapLS_IP_EBP_12 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"

what the hell does that mean???

-I presume that you are using the synth that came with SX, right? Well if that's true and you can't find it under BUS 1 then that means you have not enabled it through "VST INSTRUMENT". On the top right of the entire screen, you seen 'HELP', I think it's in the section 1 to the left of 'Help' or 2 to the left of 'Help'.

-microsoft GS wavetable Sw synth plays midi files; if you have imported one that is...

-"procedure entry point SMapLS_IP_EBP_12 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll
---I suggest you reload the program again because you are missing a .dll file, which means something in SX ain't gonna work.

DON"T GET STRESSED OUT over this, the problem will eventually be solved...

frank
i am using the synth that came with SX,,,you mean the VST instruments like the "Neon"...if that's what you mean. then I do have that enabled...my out is the Neon
maybe it is a driver problem...seems like everything is working except when i try to record the VST instrument using my yamaha

Hold on... I'm gonna get some screen shots...

BTW... What do you mean by "Neon"? Please tell...

back in 5min....

This has to be something simple in the routing. It just makes no sense that you can trigger and hear the vsti with your synth, but it doesn't record. If you see the midi "in" bar lighting up in the transport panel then midi signal is getting in there.

Do you have your synth set up as a midi device in your midi device manager? I set my PC-88 up right away when I upgraded to SX so I don't know if it affects functions if your synth isn't set up, but this is a weird one that really should have a simple answer.

how do I set up my Yamaha has a MIDI device?
the "in" is lighting up, the red light? correct? the red one lights up but not the green one...
i don't recall setting up the Yamaha on my old version of cubase, i just activated a VST instrument and I could play it using the keyboard.i can't remember if i had to do anything special to get it to work

in further bizzare news
if i go into device setup and under "all midi inputs" if i make my aardvark card "no" in the active column THEN if i make the in on a midi channel my aardvark 24/96 and the out the VST instrument then some of the data gets recorded but not all of it, it's stuttered like not all of the information is getting thru. now this only works once...if i want to record again i have to switch the in on the MIDI channle to something else, like "allMIDI inputs" then switch it back to direct pro 24/96 and i can once again sort of record.... could this be a MIDI cable problem or a keyboard problem? or does it sound more like a problem with my software
l

to just trigger sounds with your synth you shouldn't really need to set it up in the midi device, the only reason to set it up would be if you wanted SX to recognise the names of the sounds on your board. I wasn't sure so I tossed it up last night but after looking this morning I saw it isn't neccissary.

To tell the truth I think your best bet is to go to www.cubase.net and they have a specific BBS for "VST and VSTi's" and ask there. There are lots of users there who might have more ideas.

From everything you are saying I just don't see how it isn't working.
